Job Summary

The Booksavers Associate will play a critical role in managing various aspects of incoming donations and day-to-day operations of the Booksavers retail operations. This position will be responsible for coordinating with the Booksavers Team Leader daily to manage various aspects of the store operations to include but not limited to managing inventory, attending regular meetings, shelving books,answering customer questions and requests, maintaining displays and inventory, and other related duties as assigned by the manager. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, team player and a passion for fostering a positive work environment for employees, customers and volunteers.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily operations of Booksavers retail operations
  • Customer service - face-to-face, telephone and online interactions
  • Assist with incoming donations to include but limited to receiving and pricing donations
  • Be willing to learn flow of items and help with efficient ways to shelve and organize books ? Come up with creative ways to organize and display books on retail floor
  • Monitor and stock our outside merchandise
  • Be knowledgeable in trending titles and willing to learn new trends
  • Learn our store layout to help customers find items
  • Assist with other tasks as requested by the manager.

Work Environment

The Booksavers Associate is expected to report to The Booksavers Manager in the absence of the Booksavers Team Leader. This position requires attention to detail, good communication skills in order to communicate effectively with donors, customers and co-workers verbally ,as well as, written.

Harrisonburg Gift & Thrift supports the local and global relief, development and peace projects of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC.ORG). We also support other local nonprofits in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham/Augusta area that serve at-risk populations in our communities. We also strive to be good environmental stewards, saving as much as possible from the landfill.

Other Duties and Requirements

The regular schedule of work days is Monday through Friday and occasional Saturdays with a schedule agreed upon at hire. Reliable and satisfactory attendance is an essential function of this position. The duties, responsibilities, and requirements listed above should not be interpreted as a comprehensive list. Requirements:
  • Be able to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
  • Enjoy Books recommended but not required
  • Be able to work occasionally in un-air-conditioned and unheated spaces
  • Be able to stand for the majority of shift
  • Ability to operate a pallet jack and hand truck
  • Must be able to communicate (oral and written) using English
  • Computer proficiency - ability to perform basic task and use of email
  • Telephone communication skills are necessary
  • Weekend Availability
