What is book design?

Book design is the process of arranging text, images, and other elements in a book to create an appealing and readable layout. It encompasses both the cover design and the interior formatting, ensuring that the book is visually attractive and easy to navigate. Book designers work with typographic choices, page layouts, and graphic elements to enhance the reader's experience and communicate the book's message effectively. Good book design can also help a book stand out in the marketplace and support its branding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a book designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Book Designer, you need strong graphic design skills, a good understanding of typography, and a portfolio demonstrating experience in layout and print production. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is essential, and knowledge of print specifications or certification in graphic design is often preferred. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with authors and publishers. These skills ensure visually appealing, readable books that meet publishing standards and resonate with target audiences.

What are some common challenges faced by book designers when working with authors and publishers?

Book designers often navigate the challenge of balancing the creative vision of authors with the branding requirements of publishers. This may involve revising initial concepts based on feedback, adhering to strict deadlines, and ensuring the final design aligns with industry standards for readability and market appeal. Successful book designers are proactive communicators, able to justify design choices and collaborate effectively with editors, marketing teams, and printers throughout the production process.

Job description

About the Role

As a Senior Engagement Manager, you'll be the primary partner to Legora's enterprise accounts — firm or corporate — owning the most complex engagements end-to-end, from rollout through adoption, expansion, and renewal. You'll operate with high autonomy across a sophisticated book, shaping tailored adoption strategies, orchestrating senior stakeholders, and leading consultative renewal and expansion conversations.

Beyond your own portfolio, you'll build the scalable frameworks the wider team relies on, coach Engagement Managers and Associates, and feed frontline insight back to internal stakeholders to evolve how Legora delivers value at scale.

What You’ll Do
  • Serve as the primary partner to Legora's enterprise accounts — firm or corporate — owning the most complex engagements end-to-end and driving adoption and value across a sophisticated book.
  • Design the value strategy across every phase of the client relationship — from rollout through adoption, expansion, and renewal — adapting Legora's playbooks to each client's context.
  • Drive sustained engagement through value‑based success planning and executive relationships, partnering with Legal Engineering to surface high‑value use cases and reframe how clients work.
  • Lead expansion and renewal conversations with commercial acumen — identifying growth opportunities, confidently driving upsells and multi‑team expansions, and partnering with internal teams to drive client value.
  • Get ahead of adoption and retention risk — using data and health signals to act early, activate champions, and design solutions that protect long‑term retention.
  • Build with AI — automating your own workflows and sharing tooling that gives you and the team leverage, putting Legora's AI‑native way of working to work on every account.
  • Implement repeatable engagement frameworks — turning what works across your accounts into scalable adoption and expansion motions the wider team can reuse.
  • Coach Engagement Managers and Associates as a sounding board on client strategy, contributing to the evolution of Legora's engagement playbook.
What You Bring
  • 7+ years in management consulting, client advisory, or a comparable strategic, client‑facing field, owning complex, high‑value accounts.
  • A track record of driving measurable adoption, retention, and expansion across a sophisticated book of business.
  • Experience building and sustaining senior, executive‑level relationships — trusted as a strategic advisor, with the EQ to know when to listen, guide, or drive a decision.
  • Experience advising legal teams, regulated industries, or sophisticated professional services clients; legal tech or law firm experience a strong plus.
  • A builder who thrives in ambiguity and automates — fluent with AI, you create leverage for yourself and the team by building and automating workflows, not just using them.
  • Strong data fluency and a metrics‑driven read on client health and outcomes, paired with sharp communication and storytelling.
  • A consultative coach — energized by sharing what works, mentoring junior teammates, and sharpening the playbook for the whole team.
  • A passion for in‑office collaboration — we're in‑office 5 days per week in our West Loop office, building together.
What’s In It For You
  • Global collaboration: Partner with teams and clients across Europe, APAC, and North America.
  • Competitive package: Comprehensive salary, benefits, and tools for success.
  • Meaningful work: Your efforts shape how thousands of lawyers use AI daily.
  • In‑person environment: West Loop office designed for ambitious builders and company‑provided lunch daily.
  • Benefits & Perks: We invest in our people with a comprehensive, thoughtfully designed benefits package.
  • Medical, Dental & Vision
    • Multiple medical plan options through Aetna and Kaiser Permanente
    • HSA or Healthcare FSA (based on plan selection)
    • Dental plans via MetLife
    • Vision plans via Vision Care
  • Family Support
    • Generous parental leave
    • Free access to Maven Clinic
    • Dependent Care FSA
    • Free One Medical membership for employees and dependents
  • Additional Perks
    • Pre‑tax commuter benefits
    • Life Insurance + STD/LTD
    • 401(K) with generous company match
    • Unlimited PTO
    • Robust voluntary benefits, including identity protection (via Aura), legal coverage via MetLife, pet savings programs, and more
