Job description

About the Company

General Matter enriches uranium.

We are designing, building, and operating the world's lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US. ย

In the process, we are restoring America's ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.ย

Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume. ย Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.

Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable. ย We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.ย

We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms. ย

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.ย

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.ย

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.ย

Mechanical Design Engineer - Plant Piping Systems

General Matter is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineerย to transform conceptual process designs into fully engineered systems for a large-scale nuclear enrichment facility. This role focuses on detailed mechanical design, including piping systems,ย componentย selection, and structural analysis, ensuring that complex process architectures are realized safely and reliably. The ideal candidate will combineย expertiseย in mechanical engineering fundamentals with experience in high-hazard or industrial plant environments, delivering robust solutions for advanced nuclear energy production.ย

Responsibilities

  • Translateย P&IDs and process architecture outputsย into detailed mechanical designs for piping and equipment systems.ย
  • Performย componentย sizing andย selectionย (pipes, valves, fittings, supports) based on process conditions (flow, temperature, pressure).ย
  • Collaborate on routing plans and layoutsย for piping systems, ensuring efficient and maintainable configurations.ย
  • Conductย structural and flow analysisย toย validateย mechanical integrity and performance under operating conditions.ย
  • Specifyย materials, thicknesses, and support methodsย to meet safety, regulatory, and operational requirements.ย
  • Prepare detailedย engineering drawings, BOMs, and procurement specificationsย for mechanical systems.ย
  • Select components that meet technical requirements while considering availability and lead times, ensuring designs can be executed on schedule without compromising quality or safety.ย
  • Collaborate with process engineers, structural engineers, and procurement teams to ensure seamless integration of designs.ย
  • Participate inย design reviews and risk assessments, providing technical justification for design decisions.ย
  • Support installation planning and provide technical oversight during construction phases as needed.ย

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree inย Mechanical Engineeringย or a related field.ย
  • 3+ years of experienceย in mechanical design for industrial plants, chemical facilities, or similar high-hazard environments.ย
  • Strong understanding ofย fluid mechanics, structural analysis, and material selection.ย
  • Proficiencyย inย piping design standardsย (ASME, ANSI, or equivalent) and familiarity with pressure vessel codes.ย
  • Experience withย CAD toolsย for mechanical design and layout.ย
  • Ability to interpretย P&IDs and process documentationย and translate them into detailed mechanical designs.ย
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.ย
  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc).

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience inย nuclear, chemical, petrochemical, or gas processing facilities.ย
  • Familiarity withย stress analysis toolsย and piping flexibility analysis (e.g., Caesar II or similar).ย
  • Knowledge ofย compressible flow, vacuum systems, and cryogenic piping design.ย
  • Procurement experience for large-scale facilities, including vendor engagement and managing long-lead components.ย
  • Ability to thrive in aย fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, balancing technical rigor with practical constraints.ย

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
