What are boating jobs?

Boating jobs refer to a wide range of careers related to the operation, maintenance, and management of boats and watercraft. These can include positions such as boat captains, deckhands, marine mechanics, sailing instructors, and marina staff. Boating jobs may involve working on commercial vessels, recreational boats, or in support services such as boat sales and rentals. The nature of the work varies depending on the specific role, with some requiring specialized training or certifications. Many boating jobs offer opportunities to work outdoors and travel to different locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boat captain, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Boat Captain, you need expertise in navigation, seamanship, maritime safety, and typically a captain's license from a recognized authority like the U.S. Coast Guard. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, marine radios, radar, and relevant certifications such as CPR and first aid are commonly required. Leadership, situational awareness, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing crew and ensuring passenger safety. These skills and qualifications are crucial to operate vessels safely, comply with regulations, and provide a secure experience on the water.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in the boating industry, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in the boating industry often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, maintenance issues, and ensuring passenger safety. Adapting to changing weather requires strong decision-making and up-to-date knowledge of weather forecasting tools. Regular maintenance checks and a proactive approach to repairs help minimize downtime and enhance vessel reliability. Additionally, ongoing training in safety procedures and communication ensures both crew and passengers remain safe during operations. Collaborating closely with team members and staying current with industry standards can also help address these challenges effectively.

Director of Marina Operations - Harbor Point Marinas
Location: Stamford, CT
Job Description
Building and Land Technology (BLT) is seeking a Director of Marina Operations to lead the business, operations, and customer experience of Harbor Point Marinas in Stamford, Connecticut.
This is not a traditional marina management role. We are looking for a strategic, entrepreneurial, hospitality-driven leader who can develop and execute a business plan for the waterfront, grow marina occupancy and revenue, cultivate relationships within the boating community, and create an exceptional waterfront experience.
The Director of Marina Operations will have overall responsibility for the performance and growth of Harbor Point Marinas. This individual will establish the strategic direction for the marina business, identify new revenue and business development opportunities, set measurable goals, and lead the execution required to achieve them.
Beyond the marina itself, this leader will play an important role in activating the Harbor and connecting the waterfront with the broader Harbor Point community, including its residences, offices, restaurants, retailers, events, amenities, and public spaces.
The ideal candidate is equal parts strategic thinker, business operator, relationship builder, and hospitality leader. This person understands how to turn a vision into a business plan and a business plan into results. They will be highly visible on the waterfront, comfortable engaging with a high-end clientele, and energized by the opportunity to grow and evolve Harbor Point into a premier destination for the boating community.
Responsibilities of the Director of Marina Operations
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive business plan for Harbor Point Marinas and the waterfront, establishing short- and long-term priorities for revenue growth, occupancy, customer acquisition and retention, programming, partnerships, and the overall waterfront experience.
  • Own the business and operational performance of Harbor Point Marinas, with a strong focus on increasing occupancy, growing revenue, driving renewals, and strengthening customer retention. Partner closely with BLT's Asset Management team to establish annual budgets, forecasts, performance goals, and key performance indicators.
  • Develop and execute business development and customer acquisition strategies to attract seasonal and transient boaters through direct outreach, relationship building, referrals, partnerships, yacht clubs, boating organizations, events, and other channels.
  • Identify and pursue new revenue streams, services, partnerships, programming, and waterfront experiences that enhance the customer experience and strengthen the long-term performance of Harbor Point Marinas.
  • Build strong relationships throughout the boating and marine community, including boat owners, yacht clubs, marine organizations, local businesses, industry partners, and prospective customers.
  • Serve as a highly visible ambassador for Harbor Point Marinas, cultivating relationships with existing and prospective customers and delivering an exceptional, high-end hospitality experience.
  • Activate the Harbor through events, programming, partnerships, boating activities, and other initiatives that create energy and engagement along the waterfront and establish Harbor Point as a destination for the boating community.
  • Connect Harbor Point Marinas with the broader Harbor Point ecosystem, including residential communities, office tenants, restaurants, retailers, events, amenities, and public spaces.
  • Lead all aspects of day-to-day marina operations, including slip assignments, seasonal leasing, transient dockage, customer onboarding, docking activity, staffing, safety procedures, and operational execution.
  • Ensure docks, marina facilities, waterfront areas, and customer-facing spaces are maintained to a first-class standard.
  • Lead and develop the marina team, fostering a culture centered on hospitality, professionalism, responsiveness, accountability, and attention to detail.
  • Collaborate closely with BLT leadership and property management, residential, commercial, marketing, security, maintenance, and events teams to deliver a cohesive Harbor Point experience.
  • Manage day-to-day marina expenses, vendors, contracts, inventory, maintenance projects, and operational improvements.
  • Stay informed about competitive marina offerings, boating trends, customer expectations, and the regional marine market to identify new opportunities and maintain Harbor Point's competitive position.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable boating safety requirements, environmental standards, regulations, and company policies.

Requirements of the Director of Marina Operations
  • 7+ years of experience in marina operations, waterfront operations, luxury hospitality, resort or club management, property operations, or a related customer-facing business.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing business plans, growth strategies, or strategic initiatives that have produced measurable results.
  • Proven ability to grow revenue, occupancy, membership, utilization, customer acquisition, or retention within a marina, hospitality, club, resort, real estate, or similar environment.
  • Strong strategic, commercial, and entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to assess a business, identify opportunities, establish priorities, and turn ideas into measurable results.
  • Strong business and commercial acumen, with the ability to understand financial performance, manage operating expenses, interpret key business metrics, and use data to inform decisions and drive results.
  • Exceptional hospitality instincts and an understanding of what it takes to deliver a high-end, white-glove customer experience.
  • Strong business development and relationship-building skills, with the confidence and presence to engage with boat owners, residents, executives, business owners, community partners, and other high-end clientele.
  • Knowledge of marina operations, boating, marine services, and waterfront safety strongly preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to develop teams, drive accountability, and maintain consistently high service and operating standards.
  • Ability to move seamlessly between long-term strategy and hands-on execution, including business development, customer relationships, team leadership, events, financial management, and day-to-day marina operations.
  • Highly visible and proactive leadership style, with the desire to be on the waterfront engaging with customers, developing relationships, identifying opportunities, and driving results.
  • Flexible schedule with availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays during the season.

Benefits
