Job description

Boats and Fun is looking for a part-time/ Full Time / seasonal USCG-licensed captain to join our team for the summer season, holiday weekends, and possible year-round for the right candidate.


We are a family-owned and operated business based on North Captiva Island, serving guests with water taxi service, private boat tours, boat rentals, golf carts, outdoor equipment rentals, and island store.


This position is a great fit for a semi-retired captain, local licensed captain, or experienced boater with the right license who wants flexible part-time work with a well-established island business.


We are looking for someone who is friendly, energetic, helpful, reliable, and always looking for what needs to be done. A positive attitude and strong customer service are essential. Our team works hard to give guests a great experience, and we need someone who enjoys being around people, boats, and the water.


Applicants without a valid USCG Captain’s License will not be considered.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Captaining Water Taxis and Private Boat Tours

Responsibilities include operating water taxi trips between North Captiva and surrounding areas in Pine Island Sound, as well as private boat tours for guests.

Water taxi trips may include:

  • Transporting customers between islands and mainland departure points
  • Loading and unloading luggage, groceries, and supplies
  • Helping guests safely board and exit the vessel
  • Operating safely in changing weather, wind, tide, and traffic conditions

Private tours may include:

  • Showing guests the local area
  • Looking for wildlife such as dolphins, manatees, birds, and other marine life
  • Visiting nearby islands and scenic areas
  • Providing a friendly and professional guest experience

Boats may include 23 ft Glacier Bay catamarans20–24 ft deck boats, and other similar vessels.

Boat Rental Training and Customer Support


Captains will assist customers through the boat rental process from reservation to final turn-in.

Duties may include:

  • Using our computerized scheduling / reservation system
  • Taking reservations over the phone and in person
  • Teaching the Boats and Fun boating course to customers with different levels of boating experience
  • Training renters on safe operation, local routes, hazards, docking, anchoring, and basic boat systems
  • Performing pre-rental and post-rental boat inspections
  • Helping with rental checkouts and returns
  • Communicating clearly with customers about boating rules, safety, and expectations

Newly hired captains will be trained on how to teach our rental boating course.


Store, Dock, and Daily Operations

This is a hands-on island business, and captains are expected to help wherever needed.

Duties may include:

  • Assisting customers in the store
  • Making sales
  • Renting outdoor equipment such as bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, beach gear, and golf carts
  • Stocking merchandise
  • Keeping the store, dock, boats, and work areas clean and organized
  • Helping load, move, clean, and organize equipment
  • Supporting the team during busy days
  • Ensuring every customer has an excellent experience

We are not looking for someone who only wants to drive the boat. The right person will be a team player who understands that island operations require everyone to help where needed.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential — OUPV / 6-pack minimum
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and driver’s license check
  • Must enroll in our random drug testing program
  • Ability to lift 30–40 lbs on a regular basis
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and busy summer days
  • Friendly, outgoing, professional personality
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Safe and calm boat handling
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Professional appearance and positive attitude
  • Ability to help with non-captain duties when needed

Local knowledge of Lee County, Pine Island Sound, Captiva, North Captiva, Cayo Costa, Boca Grande, and surrounding waterways is preferred but not required.

Boats and Fun is a Drug-Free Workplace.


Schedule

This position is primarily available for the summer season from June through mid-August. as well as Holliday season in December and Spring Break March through April.


Additional part-time work may be available for:

  • Holiday weekends
  • Busy weekends
  • Special events
  • Year-round part-time shifts as needed


This is a great opportunity for a semi-retired captain or local captain who wants flexible, part-time work without committing to a full-time year-round schedule.

Possible shifts may include:

  • 8-10 hour shifts
  • Weekends
  • Holidays
  • Occasional evening work
  • On-call / as-needed availability


Compensation

  • $20 per hour (with plenty of opportunities for over time)
  • After hours additional bonus per trip (up to $125 per hr trip)
