General Statement of Duties
Boat Crew serve as a deckhand aboard U.S. Coast Guard inspected passenger vessels owned and operated by the Town of Greenwich providing passenger, cargo and cruise services with an emphasis on safety and customer service.
DECKHANDS WILL:
  • Arrive to work on time.
  • Know the current Maritime Security (MARSEC) Level.
  • Know the proper operation and application of all lines, safety equipment and machinery onboard. These items will be kept functional at all times.
  • Know the emergency procedures for each vessel.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and comfort of the vessels at all times.
  • Secure all lines, gates, ramps and gangways during docking and undocking.
  • Responsible for the timely and safe boarding of passengers and cargo. While boarding; beach cards will be checked, day passes/tickets collected, passes punched and the number of people on board recorded.
  • Keep the ferry dock area safe, clean and free from rubbish.
  • Sweep vessels and facility areas for persons exhibiting suspicious behavior.
  • Sweep vessels and facility areas for suspicious packages, devices or substances.
  • Be alert and observant at all times and report the unusual or unexplainable immediately.
  • Spot checking and cleaning the Ferry dock restrooms.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

APPAREL
Personnel will be provided with uniform shirts which must be worn at all times and kept neat and clean. Individuals will also wear appropriate footwear which does not include sandals or other footgear that leaves the feet exposed.
CONDUCT
Personnel are prohibited from possessing, consuming or using alcohol and/or controlled substances in the workplace. Likewise, personnel are prohibited from being under the influence of alcohol and/or controlled substances in the workplace.
All crew members will be expected to perform in an alert, efficient and courteous manner. Sleeping and lying down while on duty ashore or aboard the vessel is prohibited. Smoking is prohibited on all vessels.
Cell phones will be kept in the employee's locker for the duration of the work day. Exceptions will be considered and granted by the captain if a legitimate need exists.
Position requires high degree of concentration and focus throughout the shift.
All equipment will be used for its intended purpose only. Boat Crew report directly to ferry captains and work under both captains and senior deckhands.
Qualifications
Personnel must be at least 16 years of age and be able to pass an annual swim test, and are subject to both mandatory pre-employment and random drug testing per the United States Coast Guard during the time of their employment.
Individuals must be able to take orders, carry them out and work with the general public. Individuals will also be required to do heavy physical work such as, but not limited to: raising and lowering of gangways, lifting of boat ramps, transport of fuel drums, cargo, garbage etc. Priority in hiring will be given to those applicants who can commit to a full season. All hires will be expected to work weekends and holidays, and extended time off during the season will not be granted.
