Job description

The Captain provides friendly, personalized, and responsive service to create an exceptional dining experience. This position requires extensive knowledge of the menu, wine and beverage offerings, and recommended pairings. Captains should be prepared to answer guest questions, make thoughtful recommendations based on individual preferences, take accurate orders, serve food and beverages, and anticipate guests’ needs throughout their experience.

The Captain is responsible for coordinating closely with the entire restaurant team to provide personalized dining experiences that meet or exceed guest expectations. This includes processing guest orders accurately and ensuring that all items are prepared and delivered properly and promptly.

Captains observe guests throughout their meals to ensure satisfaction with the food, beverages, and service. They respond promptly to additional requests and communicate all relevant information to the service and culinary teams. Captains also prepare guest checks, accept payments, and assist support staff with stocking, clearing, and resetting dishes and silverware between courses. They also help clean and reset the restaurant between services and after the final guests have departed.

  • Assist the restaurant service team in greeting guests in the waiting area while waiting for all members of their party to arrive.
  • Be prepared to describe the menu and overall dining experience and answer questions about the food, beverages, or restaurant.
  • Provide detailed descriptions and thoughtful recommendations for food and beverage items based on guest preferences.
  • Take food and beverage orders accurately.
  • Ask guests about allergies or dietary restrictions and communicate all restrictions to the culinary team in accordance with the restaurant’s allergy procedures.
  • Check guests’ identification when necessary to ensure they meet the minimum legal age requirements for alcohol consumption.
  • Monitor and observe each guest’s dining experience to anticipate their needs and ensure satisfaction with the food, beverages, and service. Our goal is for guests never to have to ask for anything.
  • Act promptly and courteously to correct any issues that arise during service and communicate those issues to the entire team.
  • Enter beverage orders for the bar and serve drinks to guests as soon as they are ready.
  • Prepare guest checks, collect accurate payments, and enter gratuities correctly.
  • Enter all orders accurately into the POS according to restaurant standards.
  • Accurately complete checkout procedures at the end of each shift in accordance with the restaurant’s cash-handling policies.
  • Properly pace each meal by firing food and beverage items appropriately to the kitchen and bar.
  • Maintain constant communication with the restaurant team regarding guest preferences, requests, concerns, or issues.
  • Oversee clearing and resetting between courses while maintaining beverage and water service.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of dining tables throughout service.
  • Execute proper tableside presentation and service of dishes.
  • Maintain communication with all managers and keep them informed of any issues, concerns, or timing matters at assigned tables.
  • Assist in areas outside of the assigned station during service.
  • Help seat guests when needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized service station throughout the shift.
  • Complete all daily opening and closing side work assigned by the management team.
  • Comply with all safety, sanitation, and handwashing guidelines and procedures.
  • Attend all scheduled meetings and training sessions and offer thoughtful suggestions for improvement.
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance. The restaurant operates five days per week with a small, dedicated team, making attendance essential.
  • Assist guests and fellow team members with anything they may need, even when it falls outside of your usual responsibilities. At the restaurant, there is no such thing as “not my job.” Everyone works together to provide exceptional service to our guests.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift and move up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Safely and effectively use all necessary tools and equipment.
  • Stand and walk for an entire shift.
  • Move safely through all areas of the restaurant, which may include stairs and uneven or slippery surfaces.
