What is a board game distributor?

Board game distributors are companies or individuals who act as intermediaries between board game publishers and retailers. They purchase board games from publishers or manufacturers in bulk and then resell them to retailers, hobby shops, or sometimes directly to consumers. Distributors play a crucial role in the board game industry by helping publishers reach a wider market, managing logistics, and ensuring that new and popular titles are available to stores and customers. They also assist with warehousing, inventory management, and sometimes marketing support. Working with a distributor can help publishers focus on game development while ensuring their products reach the right audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a board game distributor?

To thrive as a Board Game Distributor, you need strong organizational skills, knowledge of logistics and supply chain management, and preferably experience in sales or distribution. Familiarity with inventory management systems, order processing software, and basic business tools like spreadsheets is typically required. Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills help you connect with retailers and manufacturers. These abilities ensure efficient product flow, foster successful partnerships, and drive business growth in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced by board game distributors when managing inventory and fulfilling orders?

Board game distributors often encounter challenges such as balancing inventory to avoid overstocking or stockouts, keeping up with rapidly changing demand, and coordinating timely shipments with publishers and retailers. Seasonal spikes, new release surges, and supply chain disruptions can also impact order fulfillment. Effective communication with manufacturers and retailers, as well as adopting robust inventory management systems, is essential for success in this fast-paced environment.

Can you make money selling board games?

A board game distributor can make money by purchasing games at wholesale prices and selling them at retail prices, often through online stores or retail outlets. Profitability depends on factors such as product demand, inventory management, and marketing skills. Success in this role requires understanding the industry, negotiating with suppliers, and managing sales channels.

How to get a job at a board game distributor?

To get a job as a board game distributor, candidates should have strong organizational skills, knowledge of the gaming industry, and experience with inventory management or logistics. This position works closely with the Art Director, Brand Management, Project Management, Product Development, and other cross-functional teams to take projects from initial concept through final production.
Key Responsibilities
Graphic Design & Creative Development
  • Design artwork for game packaging, game boards, cards, components, instruction manuals, retail displays, and supporting materials.
  • Develop creative concepts based on game themes, target audiences, and brand direction.
  • Create layouts with strong typography, composition, color, and visual hierarchy.
  • Create and modify packaging dielines using existing templates and custom specifications.
  • Develop logos, icons, patterns, and other supporting graphics as needed.
  • Stay current on trends in board games, toys, packaging, entertainment, retail, and pop culture.
Production & Artwork Management
  • Prepare accurate, production-ready artwork for manufacturing.
  • Preflight, package, and organize artwork files for production.
  • Verify imagery, product descriptions, logos, legal copy, component details, and other required elements before artwork is released.
  • Ensure artwork meets packaging dielines and manufacturing specifications.
  • Maintain organized files and version control throughout the design process.
  • Assist with photo editing and image preparation as needed.
Collaboration & Project Management
  • Work closely with the Art Director, Project Managers, Brand Management, Product Development, and other teams throughout the development process.
  • Manage multiple projects at different stages while balancing changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Incorporate creative and production feedback efficiently while maintaining design quality.
  • Adapt to changing project requirements and timelines.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional graphic design and production experience in an agency, studio, or in-house creative environment.
  • Experience designing for board games, tabletop games, toys, game packaging, or a closely related physical consumer product category.
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong packaging and product-focused graphic design. Board game or tabletop work is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Strong understanding of layout, typography, color, and print production.
  • Experience preparing production-ready files and prepress artwork.
  • Consumer packaging and dieline experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Comfortable working on a Mac platform.
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or equivalent professional experience preferred.

Additional experience with game boards, cards, components, rulebooks, licensed brands, illustration, logo design, 3D rendering, large-format graphics, or photo editing is a plus.
Benefits
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Flexible spending and health savings accounts
  • Paid time off
  • The opportunity to work in a creative, collaborative toy and game environment

Please include a portfolio with your application. Candidates with board game, tabletop game, toy, or game packaging experience are strongly encouraged to highlight that work in their portfolio.
