These ranges reflect what BNSF Railway reasonably expects to pay for this position, based on the role's level, scope, and responsibilities. Final compensation and position level will be determined by factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay and bonus eligibility, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

The BNSF Railway Law and Claims Department provides expert in-house counsel and collaborates with outside counsel to ensure the railroad operates safely and meets all legal and contractual obligations. Our licensed attorneys and legal professionals are dedicated to upholding the highest legal compliance standards. Additionally, our specialized Claims team promotes safety, investigates incidents, and resolves them ethically.

This is a full-time position located in Fort Worth, TX.  For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely.  Our leaders also foster a culture where work life balance, which requires flexibility for when life happens, is important and respected.

Travel is minimal, less than 10%

Key responsibilities may include: 

Oversight and direct involvement in regulatory proceedings before various federal and state regulatory agencies

Oversight of infrastructure project agreements including negotiation with various public and private parties

Direct handling or administration and supervision of local, state and federal administrative filings

Management of associated litigation matters and outside counsel

Consultation with governmental affairs personnel regarding legislative issues

Advise and counsel on issues affecting the company's operations and real estate holdings, including permitting and land use issues arising under state and federal laws.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor office environment.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF's assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).

  • J.D. Degree

  • Current law license (Texas preferred, but not mandatory) 

  • 2+ years of law practice

  • Excellent legal research, verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle complex and challenging assignments with extremely short turnaround deadlines

  • Ability to identify, prioritize and resolve issues quickly and effectively in a positive, commercial, and practical manner

  • Ability and commitment to work both independently and collaboratively with numerous people at all levels throughout the company

  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite, Lexis/Nexis research system and other web-based legal research tools

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience focused on handling regulatory compliance, commercial, transactional, administrative and/or commercial litigation; experience gained from work in the railroad or other transportation industry a plus

  • 5 years of experience engaging with government entities.

  • 5 years of experience with real estate transactions.
