Blythedale Children's Hospital is an independent children's specialty hospital in New York State. Our multidisciplinary team provides critical care to patients with complex medical conditions. We partner with academic medical centers in the Northeast Corridor of the United States to admit patients to our state-of-the-art 118-bed facility. Our experts integrate clinical expertise and health education in our on-site simulation rooms to provide extensive parent training to get our patients home safely. Overview

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer plans, administers, directs and coordinates all shift activities of the Nursing Department.  As designated, may be assigned primary  responsibility for a patient care unit. 

Responsibilities
  • Effectively communicates goals and objectives of the hospital nursing department, and the unit to staff.
  • Ensures that information is shared with department staff on a continual basis and fosters an environment of open communication and collaboration.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills and demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with other hospital disciplines.
  • Ensures that departmental services and activities are continually assessed and initiates appropriate changes to improve performance.
  • Analyzes problems effectively and takes appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Functions effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ensures compliance with NYSDOH and Joint Commission and other regulatory agency standards.
  • Maintains clinical competence and clinical skills as defined by the department and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Functions based on evidence based practice principles.
  • Assesses the long and short term staffing needs of patient units, based on acuity and care needs.  Coordinates with Nursing Leaders to adequately staff units.
  • Mentors and coaches staff to do their best providing support for excellence in practice.
  • Sets high standards of performance.
  • Ensures that all nursing staff understands and comply with personnel policies and procedures.
  • Appropriately commends or disciplines staff when necessary and documents same and complies with excellent HR practices.
  • Reports changes or items of importance to CNO and Nurse Directors.
  • Assures staffing schedules and coordination of supervisory coverage.
  • Attends management meetings and keeps self informed of information shared at meetings.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a pediatric setting in which 2 years must be in a supervisory position.
  • Working knowledge of computerized software programs.
Education, Licensure, and Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification.

Physical Requirements
  • Occasional prolonged standing/walking.  Occasionally lifts supplies/equipment.
