What is a Blue Carbon job?

A Blue Carbon job involves the conservation, restoration, and management of coastal and marine ecosystems—such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes—that capture and store carbon. These roles can include scientific research, policy development, ecosystem monitoring, and project implementation to mitigate climate change. Professionals in this field work with governments, NGOs, and private organizations to enhance carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and coastal resilience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Blue Carbon position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Blue Carbon role, a strong background in coastal ecosystem science, environmental management, or marine biology is essential, usually with relevant academic qualifications or experience in carbon accounting. Proficiency with GIS software, remote sensing tools, and knowledge of carbon measurement standards such as IPCC guidelines are commonly required. Excellent analytical thinking, project management abilities, and cross-disciplinary communication are key soft skills for effective collaboration and stakeholder engagement. These skills ensure accurate assessment, reporting, and implementation of blue carbon projects that support climate mitigation and sustainable shoreline management.

What types of organizations hire Blue Carbon professionals, and what would my day-to-day work involve?

Blue Carbon professionals are hired by environmental consulting firms, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), research institutions, government agencies, and multinational conservation projects. In this role, your typical day may include fieldwork in coastal habitats, analyzing data on carbon sequestration, preparing technical reports, and coordinating with local community groups or policymakers. You might also work closely with interdisciplinary teams on project design, grant proposals, and impact monitoring. This role often involves both office-based analysis and hands-on environmental work, offering a dynamic and impactful career path.

Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

Blue Origin is seeking a Senior Engineer to take direct ownership of the design and development of Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) System and crew systems hardware for our human spaceflight programs. This position is part of the Human Spaceflight Development organization, which supports Blue Origin's mission of enabling millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth.
