Lab Supervisor – Blood Donor Services

As the Lab Supervisor – Blood Donor Services, you will oversee the daily operations of the donor testing laboratory, ensuring the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of donor specimens and blood products. You will provide leadership and mentorship to laboratory staff, coordinate workflow, maintain quality and regulatory standards, and partner with physicians, clinical teams, and organizational leadership to support exceptional donor and patient care.

A typical day for a Lab Supervisor – Blood Donor Services may include:

  • Supervise the daily operations of the Blood Donor Services laboratory, ensuring efficient workflow and optimal staffing.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, scheduling, training, and performance management for laboratory personnel.
  • Ensure accurate donor testing, blood component processing, labeling, storage, and documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Monitor laboratory turnaround times, productivity, and workflow to ensure timely delivery of high-quality laboratory services.
  • Review, verify, and oversee quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and corrective action activities in compliance with FDA, AABB, CLIA, CAP, and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with all accreditation, regulatory, and organizational policies and participate in inspections and audits.
  • Oversee the operation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and validation of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Investigate quality concerns, testing discrepancies, equipment issues, and process deviations, implementing corrective and preventive actions as needed.
  • Collaborate with Blood Donor Services leadership, physicians, transfusion medicine specialists, and multidisciplinary teams to support safe blood collection and availability.
  • Monitor inventory levels of laboratory supplies, reagents, and blood donor testing materials to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Review laboratory documentation, records, and reports for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain competency assessment and continuing education programs for laboratory staff while supporting employee development and succession planning.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives designed to enhance laboratory efficiency, patient safety, donor safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to laboratory safety practices, infection prevention protocols, and environmental safety standards.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, customer service, and continuous improvement throughout the laboratory.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment while supporting the organization's mission of providing a safe and reliable blood supply.

To be considered for this Lab Supervisor – Blood Donor Services opportunity, you must:

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution.
  • Hold current Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/MT) certification through ASCP or an equivalent nationally recognized certifying agency, or be eligible to obtain certification.
  • Have at least 3–5 years of progressively responsible clinical laboratory experience, including blood bank, transfusion medicine, or blood donor services experience.
  • Previous supervisory, lead technologist, or laboratory leadership experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FDA, AABB, CLIA, CAP, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and blood bank information systems is preferred.
