The main difference between a Blockchain Protocol Engineer and a Blockchain Developer lies in their focus areas. Protocol engineers work on the core blockchain infrastructure, designing and optimizing protocols, while developers build applications and smart contracts on top of existing blockchain platforms. Both roles require technical expertise, but their responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a blockchain protocol engineer?

To thrive as a Blockchain Protocol Engineer, you need deep expertise in distributed systems, cryptography, and programming languages like Rust, Go, or C++, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with blockchain frameworks, smart contract platforms, and tools like Git, Docker, and continuous integration systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for navigating the evolving landscape of blockchain technology. These skills and qualities are essential for developing secure, scalable, and innovative blockchain protocols that meet industry demands.

What is a blockchain protocol engineer?

A Blockchain Protocol Engineer is a specialized software engineer who designs, develops, and maintains the core protocols underlying blockchain networks. Their work focuses on ensuring security, scalability, consensus mechanisms, and interoperability of blockchain systems. They often contribute to open-source blockchain projects, write low-level code, and collaborate with cryptographers and network engineers. This role requires a strong background in computer science, cryptography, and distributed systems.

What are some common challenges faced by blockchain protocol engineers when implementing new consensus mechanisms?

Blockchain Protocol Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring network security, achieving scalability, and maintaining decentralization when implementing new consensus mechanisms. Balancing these factors can be complex, as improving one area might impact another. Additionally, rigorous testing and simulation are required to prevent vulnerabilities and forks. Collaboration with cryptographers and distributed systems experts is essential to address these challenges effectively.

This role is considered the go-to technical and product expert in EMEA, supporting prospects, customers, and partners with a focus on our security and MPC technologies, reporting to the GM of Enterprise. Primarily focusing on Tier 1 global financial institutions with a significant footprint in EMEA.

The role will drive significant value working with the Commercial and Product teams with the goal of advancing and expanding Blockdaemon’s full-stack institutional offering across Wallet, Nodes/APIs, and Staking infrastructure. As a collaborative technical product expert, you will work closely with Sales Executives and Account Managers to understand prospect pain points, goals, and workflows, helping to determine product fit, advising prospects on how to leverage Blockdaemon’s solutions, and architecting new product enhancements required to best service customer needs. You will also represent Blockdaemon in the market at conferences and webinars, engaging with diverse audiences, and working closely with our Product team to provide customer feedback that helps continuously improve our products.

Your Impact
  • Technical Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert on Blockdaemon's Wallet, Staking, and Node/API products, guiding customers through technical evaluations and implementations.
  • Revenue Support: Collaborate with Sales Executives and prospects to demonstrate product fit, address technical requirements, and drive deals to successful completion.
  • Customer Engagement: Evolve our Land and Expand strategy for large institutional clients, leading professional services engagements and proof-of-value demonstrations to accelerate product adoption.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product and Engineering teams to share customer feedback, ensure feature readiness, and continuously improve our offerings.
  • Market Presence: Represent Blockdaemon at industry conferences and webinars, while developing best-practice documentation that incorporates customer insights and industry knowledge.
  • Technical Communication: Deliver customized presentations and product demonstrations to diverse audiences, from engineers to executives, adapting technical detail to ensure clarity and engagement.
Role Requirements
  • 10+ years of total work experience with at least 5 years as a solutions architect or similar role.
  • Experience with multiple development languages (e.g., Typescript, Solidity, Rust, Go), blockchain development frameworks and SDKs, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure).
  • Awareness of the institutional digital asset landscape, including the operational and security concerns specific to banks, asset managers, and other regulated entities.
  • Proven track record supporting enterprise sales cycles in a pre-sales or solutions capacity, including scoping, proof-of-value demonstrations, and technical evaluations.
  • Experience working directly with Tier 1 financial institutions or other large, security-conscious enterprises, ideally within EMEA.
  • Comfort translating between technical and business audiences, and tailoring presentations for stakeholders ranging from engineers to C-level executives.
  • Understanding of enterprise security and integration patterns, including SOC 2/ISO 27001 expectations, API authentication, and secure deployment models.
  • Strong written communication skills, with experience producing technical documentation, best-practice guides, and architecture diagrams.
Nice to Haves
  • Technical understanding of digital asset custody, key management, and cryptographic security, with hands‑on familiarity with MPC, HSMs, and/or multi‑sig architectures.
  • Working knowledge of staking mechanics, node infrastructure, and blockchain APIs across major networks (e.g., Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana).

Pay range is $150,000 - $180,000. This range reflects base compensation only and does not include on‑target earnings (OTE). Salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. The range shown reflects the target minimum and maximum for the role across all U.S. locations. Actual pay is determined by location, skills, and relevant experience.
