Overview
Big River Trenchless & GeoServices (BRTG) is a leader in tunneling and underground construction. Our team has over 90 years in combined experience, having successfully completed several projects in America's south, most notably Texas.
BRTG's mission is to expand nationwide providing best in-class trenchless services including conventional tunneling, micro tunneling, annular pressure grouting, jack and bore, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), shaft construction, soil freeze, drill and blast, rib and lag, along with installation services for trench boxes/slide rails and liner plates.
Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The TMB or MTBM (Microtunnel Boring Machine) Operator is responsible for the safe, precise, and efficient operation of microtunneling boring machines used in underground pipeline installation and trenchless construction. The operator works from a surface control station to manage machine functions, monitor alignment, and support tunnel production according to project specifications.
Responsibilities:
  • Operate the TMB or MTBM according to project tunneling parameters and engineer specifications.
  • Monitor machine line and grade to ensure tunneling alignment stays within required tolerances.
  • Actively participate in assembly, disassembly, mobilization, and demobilization of the TMB or MTBM system.
  • Conduct daily machine inspections, troubleshooting, and assist with routine maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Assist with inspection test plans for all utility connections and machine components.
  • Keep accurate operational logs and reports as required by project scope.
  • Participate in safety meetings and ensure compliance with all HSE (health, safety, and environmental) standards.
  • Support technical troubleshooting and coordination with other crew members and subcontractors as needed.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Several years of experience operating MTBM or similar microtunneling equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of tunneling procedures and equipment systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret machine data and guidance instrumentation.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary field team.
  • Willingness to work variable schedules and adapt to project site requirements.

Physical & Work Environment:
  • Work occurs primarily at construction or tunneling job sites.
  • Ability to climb in/out of shafts, work in all weather conditions, and occasionally lift heavy objects is required.
  • Operation is typically remote from surface control cabins using consoles and monitoring systems.

Education & Certifications (Optional):
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Any relevant safety certifications (confined space entry, fall protection, etc.) depending on employer requirements.

Training:
  • Additional hands-on training will be offered.
