Summary:
Assembles, plants, and detonates charges of industrial explosives to loosen earth, rock to facilitate removal by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs pre-shift inspection
Designs shots with the proper delays (electric, nonelectric) must know depth and spacing of individual benches
Keeps records of all inventories (cast booster, detonators, nitrates, emulsions etc.)
Figures scale distance, lbs/delay, power factors
Must know how to deck a shot and how to load a presplit
Keeps explosive truck in good working order, including cleaning out augers if necessary
Greases all bearings in augers
Operates the sequential board
Posts blast site while shot is being loaded and attends site until shot is fired
Drives explosive truck in a safe manner
Never works with back to highwall and remains a safe distance from highwall
Watches for changes in weather that could affect blasting. (Thunderstorms, high winds)
Must follow all MSHA and Mulzer rules
Supervisory Responsibilities
Oversees the blasting process and the activities of the blaster helpers
Qualifications

Must be familiar with all aspects of blasting. (dos and don'ts)
Education and/or Experience
Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to reach and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
