Job description

Job Title: Residential Life Assistant - LIVE IN
Department: Ballet School
Reports To (Job Title): Manager of Residential Life
Classification and Hours: Hourly regular full time; 35-40 hours per week (Tues-Sat with evenings off); on-call overnights 3-4 nights per week; requires complimentary housing at student residence.
Compensation: $23 - $25 per hour

Job Purpose: 

Under supervision of the Manager of Residential Life, the Residential Life Assistant assists with planning and implementation of student life programming, supervision of students, chaperoning field trips, with the safety, health, and wellness of students and staff as the priority.

Residential Life Assistant must be at least 21 years old. A two-bedroom, partially furnished apartment at the SFCM Bowes Center will be provided. The 2nd bedroom will be occupied by a Part-Time Residential Life Assistant. No more than two individuals will share the apartment. One meal per day is provided via the SFCM meal-plan.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Under the direction of the Manager, Residential Life, serves “in-loco parentis” for students living in the facility and responds to any emergency (fire, medical, earthquake, etc.). Reinforces residents’ compliance with fire, safety, security and curfew guidelines and procedures. Triages all urgent matters involving the students and residence and communicates with parents. Supervises minor students to scheduled, urgent, and emergency doctor’s appointments in consultation with School administration.
  • Cultivate, coordinate, and assist in the development of student leadership and responsibility through programming and direct involvement with students. Oversees and assures student timely participation in housekeeping assignments, and assures student timely participation events, activities, bed-check, and curfew. Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and events with a focus on high quality, safe and age-appropriate activities in coordination with Manager, Residence Life.
  • Educate students to be supportive community members who are responsible for their actions and behavior toward each other, as well as toward the community in which they live. Communicate with students regarding the rationale behind policies and procedures, emphasizing the educational value of the standards to which students are held.
  • Establish and maintain communication with students through individual contacts, meetings, and discussions. Coordinate implementation of roommate agreement and community agreement process. Applies fair and consistent disciplinary standards for all dormitory students. Refers all major disciplinary offenses to the Manager of Residence Life or Manager, Student Services
  • Manages some facility systems in coordination with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music facilities team and according to prescribed guidelines: room assignments, badge issuance, maintenance and usage of office space, common room, kitchen, storage areas, laundry room, room check etc. Facilitate schedule for Residential Staff with direction from Manager, Residential Life.
  • Assume "on-call" responsibility on a scheduled basis.
  • Performs other duties at required or assigned by supervisor.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to physically assist an injured student which may include lifting the individual and supporting their weight with your shoulders or carrying the injured student. Must be able to lift boxes of supplies weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to climb/descend stairs

Required Licenses:

  • CPR and First Aid certification (paid for by SFB)
