How much do bird point count jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for bird point count in the United States is $14.84, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.70 and $17.07 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are bird point counts?

Bird point counts are a method used by ornithologists and wildlife biologists to estimate the abundance and diversity of bird species in a specific area. During a point count, an observer stands at a fixed location (the 'point') for a set period of time, typically between 3 to 10 minutes, and records all birds seen or heard within a certain radius. This standardized survey technique helps scientists monitor bird populations, study habitat use, and assess the impact of environmental changes. Bird point counts are widely used in ecological research, conservation planning, and long-term monitoring projects.

What is the difference between Bird Point Count vs Bird Survey Technician?

AspectBird Point CountBird Survey Technician
CertificationsBird identification, data collectionBird identification, data collection
Work EnvironmentField surveys at specific pointsField surveys, habitat assessment
Employer & IndustryWildlife agencies, conservation groupsWildlife agencies, environmental consulting

Bird Point Count focuses specifically on conducting standardized bird surveys at fixed locations to monitor populations. Bird Survey Technicians may perform a broader range of field tasks, including habitat assessments and various wildlife surveys. While both roles require bird identification skills and fieldwork experience, Bird Point Count is more specialized in avian population monitoring, whereas Bird Survey Technicians have a wider scope of survey activities.

What are some common challenges faced during bird point count surveys in the field?

During bird point count surveys, observers often face challenges such as inclement weather, difficult terrain, and the need to identify birds by both sight and sound, sometimes in dense vegetation. Early morning starts are typical, as birds are most active at dawn, requiring flexibility and stamina. Additionally, accurate data recording and minimizing disturbance to wildlife are essential, and teamwork is crucial when working in remote or unfamiliar areas. These challenges can be rewarding for those passionate about fieldwork and bird conservation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bird Point Count Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bird Point Count Technician, you need strong bird identification skills (by sight and sound), attention to detail, and often a background in biology or ecology. Familiarity with GPS devices, data collection apps, and sometimes audio recording equipment is typically required. Excellent observational skills, patience, and the ability to work independently in remote locations are valuable soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate data collection and contribute to meaningful avian research and conservation efforts.
