A Bird Keeper is responsible for the care, feeding, and health monitoring of birds in zoos, aviaries, or wildlife centers. They maintain clean and safe enclosures, prepare diets, and observe bird behavior for any signs of illness or distress. Bird Keepers may also assist with breeding programs, enrichment activities, and public education. The role requires knowledge of avian species, attention to detail, and a passion for bird conservation.
A typical day for a Bird Keeper involves preparing specialized diets, feeding and watering birds, cleaning enclosures, and conducting regular health checks to monitor for signs of illness or distress. You may also participate in enrichment activities, maintain accurate records, and engage with visitors or educational programs. Collaboration with veterinary staff and other animal care teams is common, especially when addressing behavioral or medical concerns. Bird Keepers usually work outdoors and indoors in various weather conditions, and some weekend or holiday shifts may be required depending on the facility.
To thrive as a Bird Keeper, you need a solid understanding of avian biology, animal husbandry, and experience handling various bird species, often supported by a relevant degree or certification such as a diploma in zoology or animal care. Familiarity with enrichment tools, data entry systems for animal records, and safe use of cleaning/disinfection equipment is common in this role. Strong observation skills, attention to detail, communication, and teamwork will help you excel in working closely with colleagues and monitoring birds’ well-being. These skills are vital for maintaining the health of the birds, adhering to safety protocols, and ensuring a positive visitor and animal experience.
