Job description
The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin Madison School of VeterinaryMedicine invites applications for a full-time position within the Small Animal Internal Medicine serviceat UW Veterinary Care. This position is available at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the clinical track or tenure track, tailored to the individual candidate's qualifications and interests.
Faculty in this role will contribute to the teaching mission of the school through both clinical anddidactic instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents, as well as through participation in continuing education programs. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage inscholarly activity, whether through clinical research, translational studies, or educationalscholarship, that supports academic clinical practice.
The new hire will join a collaborative SAIM team currently composed of four clinical track faculty. Inaddition to faculty, the SAIM team includes 6 residents, 12 rotating interns, 4 certified veterinarytechnicians, 1 veterinary assistant, and 1 client care liaison. Clinical service responsibilities in UWVeterinary Care (UWVC) include providing high-quality patient care and hands-on training for veterinary students, interns, and residents. Strong communication skills and a commitment toconsulting with referring veterinarians and clients are essential. SAIM manages approximately 2,500cases annually out of the 27,400 small animal patients seen each year at UWVC. The SVM is acollegial, collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board-certified experts in alliedservices including anesthesia and pain management, cardiology, dentistry and oral surgery,dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, medical and radiation oncology,ophthalmology, anatomic and clinical pathology, primary care, special species, and soft tissue andorthopedic surgery. Additionally, the hospital has a dedicated LCSW who meets with clients andoffers support groups.
In 2024, UWVC opened a new state-of-the-art hospital. SAIM now has access to an expansive suite of interventional radiology and endoscopy equipment, including new Olympus flexible endoscopes,Storz rigid and resectoscope systems, Ho:YAG, CO2, and diode lasers, PET/CT imaging, a dedicated endoscopy/laparoscopy OR, a vascular IR suite, and standing videofluoroscopic swallow studycapabilities. We also offer extracorporeal therapies including intermittent hemodialysis, ultrafiltration, plasmapheresis, and hemoperfusion jointly with the Emergency and Critical Care service. SAIM alsotreats 1-3 cats weekly with I-131, a service greatly valued by the community.
Extensive opportunities for collaborative research and teaching exist within the School of VeterinaryMedicine and the UW- Madison campus. The School of Medicine & Public Health, the College ofAgriculture & Life Sciences, the School of Pharmacy, the Biotechnology Center, and the School ofEducation are located within a short distance of the School of Veterinary Medicine on the UWMadison campus. A close relationship also exists with the Wisconsin State Veterinary DiagnosticLaboratory which is located within the same footprint on campus as the School of VeterinaryMedicine. Key Job Responsibilities:Tenure track faculty at the University of Wisconsin are expected to participate in clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents; participate in continuing education programs; and conduct basic science or clinical research that advances the discipline.
Responsibilities of the position include:
-Clinical Responsibilities: Up to 20 weeks of clinical coverage and teaching, training and supervision of residents and interns; clinical teaching of 4th year veterinary students; supervision of, training of residents in, and performance of endoscopy and other interventional procedures.
-Non-Clinical Teaching Responsibilities: Didactic teaching within both the preclinical curriculum and within the house officer curriculum to include leading and attendance at rounds, laboratory course teaching, mentorship of interns and residents.
-Research Responsibilities: Perform clinical research in the SAIM section, including mentorship of house officers and graduate students in research projects.
-Service Responsibilities: Involvement in committees at the department, school, university, and professional organization levels, participation in continuing education programs for veterinary practitioners in Wisconsin.

Required Qualifications:Prior academic experience beyond residency training is preferred, though equivalent experience in a specialty practice setting will also be considered. The distribution of responsibilities will be tailored based on the needs of the service and department, as well as the candidate's individual strengths, expertise, and career goals. Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills are essential, as this role involves close coordination with other services and sections within the hospital.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience in interventional procedures beyond standard endoscopy is highly valued.
Education:Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, by start date. Board certification or board eligibility in Small Animal Internal Medicine is required by start date.
