What is a biotech manufacturing associate?

Biotech Manufacturing Associates are professionals who work in the production of biotechnology products, such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and other biologically derived materials. They are responsible for operating equipment, following strict protocols, and maintaining sterile environments to ensure product quality and safety. Their duties often include preparing materials, monitoring production processes, troubleshooting equipment issues, and documenting all activities according to regulatory standards. This role is essential in ensuring that biotech products are manufactured efficiently and meet both industry and government regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biotech manufacturing associate?

To thrive as a Biotech Manufacturing Associate, you typically need a background in biology, chemistry, or a related field, along with experience in GMP-regulated environments. Familiarity with bioprocessing equipment, laboratory instrumentation, and documentation systems such as batch records is crucial. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong problem-solving abilities help you excel in this collaborative and regulated field. These skills ensure the consistent production of safe, high-quality biotech products while maintaining compliance with industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by biotech manufacturing associates, and how can they be managed effectively?

Biotech Manufacturing Associates often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and working under tight production deadlines. Effective management of these challenges involves strong attention to detail, proactive communication with cross-functional teams such as quality assurance and engineering, and continuous learning to stay updated on new protocols and technologies. Developing problem-solving skills and embracing a collaborative mindset can also help associates consistently contribute to high-quality production outcomes.

What is the difference between Biotech Manufacturing Associate vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectBiotech Manufacturing AssociateLaboratory Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require associate degreeHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require associate degree or certification
Work EnvironmentManufacturing floor, production lines, cleanroomsLaboratories, research facilities, testing environments
Industry UsageBiotech manufacturing, pharmaceutical productionResearch labs, quality control, testing labs

While both roles support biotech operations, a Biotech Manufacturing Associate primarily works on production and manufacturing processes in a cleanroom environment, focusing on assembling, monitoring, and maintaining manufacturing equipment. In contrast, a Laboratory Technician typically conducts experiments, tests, and quality control procedures in a laboratory setting. Both roles require attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

About the Company

SiPhox Health is building a next-generation, silicon-photonicsโ€“based blood testing platform that brings advanced clinical diagnostics into the home. Our technology integrates precision optics, microfluidics, and immunoassay chemistry into a compact system capable of generating laboratory-quality biomarker results from a small capillary blood sample. We are expanding our manufacturing operations and are hiring five Founding Manufacturing Operators to help build the production engine behind our cartridge and instrument platform. This is a hands-on, high-precision role at the intersection of semiconductor technology, microfluidics, and biotechnology.

About the Role

As a Founding Manufacturing Operator, you will not only execute production processes, you will help define them. These first operator hires will help establish production workflows, assembly standards, quality documentation practices, multi-shift operational discipline, and training processes for future team members. Operators will be cross-trained across multiple production areas, including cartridge assembly, reagent handling, optical packaging, and instrument operation.

Responsibilities

Microfluidic Cartridge Assembly

  • Assemble diagnostic cartridges integrating silicon photonic chips
  • Integrate flow cells, seals, adhesives, and precision components
  • Perform visual and mechanical inspection of assembled units
  • Execute controlled assembly procedures with high repeatability

Optical Packaging

  • Align and mount silicon photonic chips and optical components to production tolerances
  • Perform die attach, wire bonding support, and optical coupling/alignment procedures as directed by process engineering
  • Operate and monitor optical test/alignment equipment to verify coupling efficiency and performance
  • Inspect packaged optical assemblies for defects, misalignment, or damage
  • Maintain precise handling and ESD/contamination controls appropriate to sensitive optical components

Reagent Handling & Carousel Loading

  • Fill reagent reservoirs and rotating carousels with microliter precision
  • Handle biological reagents under controlled lab conditions
  • Maintain strict lot traceability and material control
  • Prevent contamination through disciplined workspace management

Instrument Operation

  • Run cartridges on development and validation instruments
  • Execute defined test protocols
  • Log, track, and organize performance data
  • Identify deviations, troubleshoot basic issues, and escalate appropriately

Process Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide feedback on SOPs and workflow optimization
  • Help refine assembly fixtures and production layout
  • Support validation, verification, and scale-up activities
  • Contribute to building a disciplined, high-throughput manufacturing culture

Shift Structure & Operational Growth

To support accelerated development and validation timelines, we are building structured shift coverage. Operators will be cross-trained across cartridge assembly, optical packaging, reagent handling, and instrument operation to support flexible coverage across both shifts.

Two shift options:

  • 1st Shift: 6:00 AM โ€“ 2:30 PM
  • 2nd Shift: 2:00 PM โ€“ 10:30 PM

Extended or weekend coverage may be added as throughput increases. Some roles may operate on fixed shifts; others may support flexible coverage during peak periods. Shift differentials may apply.

Qualifications

Required

  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong fine motor skills and comfort handling small components
  • Experience in laboratory, semiconductor, biotech, or medical device environments
  • Ability to follow controlled documentation and SOPs rigorously
  • Structured and methodical work style

Preferred

  • Experience with microfluidics or fluid handling systems
  • Experience with optical alignment, photonics packaging, or semiconductor packaging processes
  • Experience operating analytical or diagnostic instruments
  • Familiarity with GMP, ISO 13485, or regulated environments
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, or related field

Why Join SiPhox?

  • Be part of the founding manufacturing team of a breakthrough diagnostics platform
  • Work at the intersection of photonics, microfluidics, and biotechnology
  • Help scale a venture-backed company redefining blood testing
  • Build expertise in a rare and highly technical manufacturing environment
  • Grow with the company as operations expand
  • We provide medical, dental and vision insurance benefits
  • SiPhox deeply cares about employee's health and provides a fully paid LifeTime Gym Membership
