What are Biotech CPAs?

Biotech CPAs are Certified Public Accountants who specialize in serving clients within the biotechnology industry. They possess expertise in handling the unique financial, regulatory, and tax challenges faced by biotech companies, such as R&D tax credits, intellectual property valuation, and compliance with industry-specific regulations. Biotech CPAs often advise startups and established firms on financial planning, fundraising, and audit preparation. Their specialized knowledge helps ensure that biotech companies remain financially healthy and compliant with applicable laws.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biotech CPA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biotech CPA, you need a strong background in accounting, finance, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a CPA license and experience in the biotechnology or life sciences sector. Proficiency with accounting software (such as QuickBooks or SAP), financial modeling tools, and an understanding of industry-specific regulations like SOX and SEC reporting is crucial. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills set top professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and effective collaboration with both scientific and business teams, which are vital in the fast-evolving biotech industry.

What are some unique challenges a CPA faces when working in the biotech industry?

CPAs in the biotech industry often encounter unique challenges such as navigating complex revenue recognition for research grants, managing accounting for intellectual property and R&D expenses, and staying current with rapidly evolving regulatory requirements. The industry’s reliance on milestone payments, joint ventures, and licensing agreements can make financial reporting and audits more intricate. Additionally, biotech CPAs frequently collaborate with scientific teams to understand project timelines and funding needs, requiring strong communication skills and adaptability.

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled, licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Puerto Rico to manage the comprehensive financial and tax affairs for a High-Net-Worth Individual (HNWI) and their associated Puerto Rico-based LLC.

The ideal candidate will be an expert in the complexities of the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code and have a deep understanding of local tax incentives (e.g., Act 60). You will serve as a strategic advisor, ensuring full compliance while optimizing tax positions for both the individual and the business entity.

We prioritize enthusiasm and passion over traditional “Big Five” experience.

Key Responsibilities

1. Puerto Rico Tax Compliance & Strategy

  • Prepare and file all Puerto Rico individual income tax returns (Form 482) for high-net-worth family
  • Manage tax filings for Puerto Rico LLCs, including informative returns and partnership filings where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with Act 60 (formerly Act 20/22) requirements, including annual reports and maintaining the tax exemption decree.
  • Oversee municipal tax requirements, including Patente Municipal (Volume of Business Tax) and CRIM (Property Tax).

2. Accounting & Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate books and records for the LLC in accordance with GAAP or tax-basis accounting.
  • Perform quarterly and year-end closings, providing detailed financial statements.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and personal financial statements for the individual.
  • Coordinate with external auditors or legal counsel as necessary.

3. Strategic Advisory

  • Provide proactive tax planning to minimize liabilities across PR and Federal jurisdictions (where applicable).
  • Advise on the tax implications of local investments, real estate transactions, and cross-border income.
  • Monitor changes in Puerto Rico Department of the Treasury (Hacienda) regulations and advise on impact.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Licensure: Active CPA license in Puerto Rico (Colegio de Contadores Públicos Autorizados de Puerto Rico) is mandatory.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in tax accounting, specifically working with HNWIs and Puerto Rico business structures.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Deep fluency in the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code and the PR Incentives Code (Act 60).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in PR-specific tax software (e.g., Expert Tax, SURI platform) and accounting software (QuickBooks, Xero, or similar).
  • Communication: Bilingual in English and Spanish is required, with the ability to explain complex PR tax laws to stakeholders.
  • Integrity: Absolute discretion and confidentiality regarding personal and business finances.
