Professionals in this field develop and enforce policies, conduct risk assessments, and implement measures to safeguard agriculture, food supply, and ecosystems. They may work in government agencies, research institutions, or private industries to manage threats such as diseases, invasive species, and bioterrorism. Their role is critical in maintaining public health, food security, and environmental stability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in biosecurity, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Biosecurity role, you need strong knowledge of microbiology, disease prevention, and risk assessment, typically supported by a degree in biology, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols, pathogen detection systems, and regulatory compliance tools like biosafety guidelines or the Select Agent Program is common. However, these challenges make the role dynamic and rewarding, providing continuous learning and opportunities to strengthen your expertise.

How to become a biosecurity specialist?

To become a biosecurity specialist, typically a bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field is required, along with knowledge of disease prevention and control measures. Relevant certifications, such as in biosafety or biosecurity management, can enhance job prospects. Experience in laboratory settings or public health agencies is also valuable.

Who We Are Looking For

Orbit Farm Technologies (A CCR Technologies Company) is a leader in agricultural technology, specializing in biosecurity systems, compliance automation, and operational efficiency solutions for livestock production. We support producers, veterinarians, and audit teams with tools that ensure consistent adherence to biosecurity standards and best practices.

The Biosecurity Auditor supports Orbit’s biosecurity audit program by conducting and reviewing on-site and virtual audits of facilities and transport areas within farming environments to ensure biosecurity standards are consistently met. This role is critical to Orbit’s proactive efforts to prevent the spread of disease across partner farms. By enforcing strict adherence to established biosecurity standards, the Biosecurity Auditor plays a key role in maintaining consistent, high-quality audit outcomes across Orbit’s biosecurity monitoring processes.

What You’ll Accomplish and Experience

Plan & Conduct Audits

  • Perform on-site and virtual audits (Eyes on Glass) of facilities, farm sites, transport, and entry/exit workflows.
  • Assess compliance with established SOPs (entry protocols, downtime, PPE use, line-of-separation, vehicle hygiene, anteroom workflows).
  • Evaluate administrative controls (sign-in logs, downtime tracking, contractor onboarding) and technical controls (access control rules, cameras, alarms).

Evidence Collection & Root Cause Analysis

  • Gather objective evidence (photos/video clips, access logs, time stamps, equipment conditions).
  • Trace non-conformances to root cause and risk severity; prioritize corrective actions by exposure risk and recurrence likelihood.

Reporting & Improvement

  • Deliver concise reports with a clear scorecard, risk heatmap, and prioritized corrective action plan (CAP) including owners and timelines.
  • Track CAP closure and verify effectiveness in follow-up audits.

Training & Coaching

  • Provide on-the-spot coaching to staff and contractors.
  • Support client trainings on high-impact behaviors (clean/dirty line discipline, footwear & hand hygiene, entry sequencing, vehicle staging).

Data & Systems

  • Leverage Orbit’s “Eyes on Glass” remote monitoring to validate adherence (e.g., entry workflows, line-of-separation).
  • Use access control and camera data to reconstruct events and quantify compliance trends.
  • Maintain well-structured audit records; contribute to dashboards and continuous improvement loops.

Standards & Governance

  • Help maintain and refine Orbit’s biosecurity standards, checklists, and scoring model.
  • Participate in incident reviews (e.g., PRRS events) to inform preventive controls and policy updates.

Desirable Previous Experience

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable using digital platforms for audits, scoring, and documentation (training provided).
  • Experience in livestock production or biosecurity auditing (not required).
  • Familiarity with disease transmission principles (e.g., PRRS, PEDv, influenza).
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to evaluate process compliance.

Work Schedule & Compensation

  • Full-time: 40+ hours per week
  • Fully remote role with all necessary training and access provided.
  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience.
