How much do biorefining jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for biorefining in the United States is $26.51, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.56 and $27.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in biorefining, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in biorefining often encounter challenges such as optimizing feedstock variability, maintaining process efficiency, and meeting environmental regulations. Addressing these issues requires strong problem-solving skills, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and staying updated on the latest technological advancements. Regular communication with engineers, chemists, and regulatory experts helps ensure smooth operations and compliance, while ongoing training and adaptation foster career growth and job satisfaction.

What is biorefining?

Biorefining is the process of converting biomass—such as plants, agricultural waste, or other organic materials—into a variety of valuable products like fuels, chemicals, and energy. Similar to the way a traditional petroleum refinery produces different products from crude oil, a biorefinery uses biological, chemical, or physical processes to transform renewable raw materials. This approach helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and supports the development of sustainable, circular economies. Biorefining plays a key role in advancing green technologies and addressing climate change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Biorefining role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a biorefining role, you need a solid background in chemical engineering, biology, or environmental science, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with process simulation tools (such as Aspen Plus), laboratory instrumentation, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help professionals innovate and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary environments. These skills ensure efficient conversion of biomass into valuable fuels and products, maintaining safety and sustainability standards.

What is the difference between Biorefining vs Biofuel Technician?

AspectBiorefiningBiofuel Technician
Required CredentialsDegree in Chemical, Biological, or Environmental EngineeringAssociate or Bachelor's in Environmental Science or Chemistry
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, research labs, manufacturing facilitiesProduction plants, field sites, laboratory settings
Industry UsageDeveloping and optimizing renewable bioproducts from biomassOperating and maintaining biofuel production equipment

Biorefining involves the broader process of converting biomass into a variety of bioproducts, including biofuels, chemicals, and materials, often requiring advanced engineering skills. In contrast, a Biofuel Technician focuses specifically on the operational aspects of biofuel production, including equipment maintenance and process monitoring. Both roles are essential in the renewable energy industry but differ in scope and technical focus.

We offer robust professional development opportunities, and a competitive benefits package designed to support your career and well-being.

Job Description

The RRES Center at NLR has an opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher within the Chemical Catalysis and Reaction Engineering group. Our group is conducting research to enable cost-effective processes for biomass and waste feedstock conversion and chemical recycling of waste plastics.

This position focuses on reaction engineering for the fractionation of biomass into polysaccharide-rich pulps and lignin- and extractives-rich oils, with an aim to improve the atom economy of existing pulping infrastructure through new process technology development. This position will involve reaction engineering efforts to enable facile biomass fractionation processes, ideally in existing or retrofitted kraft pulping systems, and downstream fractionation of the solid and liquid products. Candidates will collaborate with a large, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional team. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal up to three years.

We encourage interested candidates to see the following papers:
