Job description

Under general direction, the Laboratory Animal Sciences Technician will perform a variety of tasks following established techniques and procedures. The Technician will assist in study execution; maintain animal areas, supplies and equipment; collect samples from and administers agents to research animals as IACUC approved studies require.  

Documents laboratory work to acceptable standards and maintains laboratory/medical equipment and supplies in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), protocols and regulations. The successful candidate will assist in administrative functions of study execution such as labeling collection tubes and transporting supplies to appropriate area, and performing all other related duties and tasks as required or assigned.


Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of demonstrated work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.

Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.

Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and other heavy equipment, pushing, bending, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, outdoor work, working in extremes temperature and humidity.  Must be able to wear a respirator and protective clothing or equipment. A Post-offer physical and background check/security clearance are required.  Ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force base (KAFB) is required.

ALAT Certification is preferred.


Work is performed in a wet laboratory environment.  Will operate standard laboratory equipment and will frequently stand, walk, sit, perform lab- and desk-based computer tasks, perform laboratory techniques requiring grasping/pipetting/hand dexterity, perform repetitive motions and occasionally lift objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.  Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator.  May work in close proximity to an environment containing research animals and may be required to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.
