What is biomedical science research?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals in biomedical science research, and how can they be navigated?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biomedical science researcher, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Biomedical Science Research vs Biomedical Laboratory Technician?
| Aspect | Biomedical Science Research | Biomedical Laboratory Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Biomedical Science or related field; often requires research experience | Associate's degree or certification in biomedical laboratory technology |
| Work Environment | Research labs, universities, pharmaceutical companies | Hospitals, diagnostic labs, clinical settings |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Academic, research institutions, biotech firms | Healthcare facilities, diagnostic labs |
| Job Focus | Designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data | Performing tests, preparing samples, operating lab equipment |
Biomedical Science Research and Biomedical Laboratory Technician roles share some laboratory skills but differ mainly in focus and education. Biomedical Science Researchers focus on experimental design and data analysis, often requiring advanced degrees, while Biomedical Laboratory Technicians perform routine testing and sample preparation in clinical settings. Both roles are vital in healthcare and research industries, but they serve different functions and require different qualifications.

Job Description
The Department of Biology at Montclair State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biomedical Science. We seek an outstanding scholar and educator who will establish an innovative, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, demonstrate excellence in teaching across the biology curriculum, and contribute to the department's strong tradition of collegiality, service, and student success. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative department within a growing R2 institution committed to inclusive excellence, interdisciplinary research, and innovation in science education. Teaching could include courses in introductory cell and molecular biology, advanced molecular biology, genetics, or courses in other areas developed by the successful candidate. These courses will support graduate and undergraduate students in the biology degree program tracks.
All research areas in cell and molecular biology will be considered, with a preferred emphasis on biomedical research using both standard and innovative organismal models. We seek candidates who are interdisciplinary, collaborative, and student-centric. As a Biology Department that integrates the work of ecology, physiology, and cell/molecular researchers, we welcome multidisciplinary research approaches. The involvement of undergraduate and graduate students in research is a priority, including a mentoring approach providing fundamental training in the process of science.
Faculty members are expected to contribute to the University's mission through excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.
Teaching: The standard annual load for tenure-track faculty is 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) a semester, with reassigned time (course release) available for faculty with additional responsibilities such as mentoring doctoral faculty or administering programs. Faculty are expected to center student success and measurable learning outcomes through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and the integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments. Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising, and developing and updating courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.
Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity: Faculty are expected to be productive scholars or artists whose work embodies formal inquiry or creative expression that expands, enhances, or applies knowledge. Research results must be shared in significant national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues following rigorous review. The University supports these endeavors through the Faculty Scholarship Program (FSP), which typically provides research-active faculty with up to 6 TCH of reassigned time per academic year to pursue their scholarly agenda.
Service: Faculty members are expected to perform valuable service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities. This includes participating in shared governance, academic program vitality, and sharing professional expertise within and beyond the University. Service activities are separate and distinct from the specific assignments for which faculty members receive course release.
