Job description


The Mechanobiology of Morphogenesis Laboratory at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) has a position available for a Research Associate starting in the Fall of 2026 or Spring of 2027. The selected Research Associate will work in a team setting to support scientific research in the lab of Dr. Weiyi Qian at the Department of Biomedical Engineering. This role involves the comprehensive management of our state-of-the-art zebrafish aquaculture facility. Key responsibilities include the care, breeding, and rearing of zebrafish, as well as conducting genotyping and phenotyping procedures to support ongoing research.
In this role, the successful candidate is also responsible for conducting independent basic science experimentation based on research conducted in the assigned laboratory under the mentorship of a senior scientist. An individual is expected to seek to build a portfolio of research accomplishments in preparation for acquiring a higher degree in biomedical research or medicine (Ph.D. or M.D., for example).
This is a temporary, part-time (28 hours/week) position.
Responsibilities
  1. Care, breeding, and rearing of zebrafish, as well as conducting genotyping and phenotyping
  2. procedures to support ongoing research.
  3. Monitor fish facility and laboratory inventory and assist with ordering and stocking of supplies.
  4. Operate, calibrate, and maintain fish facility and laboratory equipment.
  5. Prepare samples, reagents, and solutions to support ongoing research activities
  6. Presenting findings at lab meeting, responds to challenges, and participates in exchanges of ideas to advance the science.
  7. Communicating results and collaborates with other professionals in the lab.
  8. Preparing figures and diagrams for presentations and publications.
  9. Based on results, independently suggesting and testing modifications to protocols.
  10. Recording all experimental findings in an electronic laboratory notebook, analyzing and interpreting experimental findings.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education: College graduate with a Bachelor's in Biological Sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or Genetics).
  • Experience: Prior research experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Capable of communicating well in English (both orally and in writing).
    • Self-motivation.
    • Have enthusiasm for science, scientific discussions, and running experiments.
    • Have the ability to work alone and with others.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's in Biology, Fisheries, or related fields.
  • Experience: Prior Aquaculture experience.
