Job Description
As a recognized multidisciplinary expert, must drive functional performance by designing and implementing studies that advance emerging technologies to improve the translatability of AbbVie's model development by effectively leading, mentoring, guiding and/or supervising scientific personnel. Must independently conceive, execute and communicate novel multidisciplinary research or development strategies that achieve project and area goals. Must serve as a lead scientist on projects and contribute scientific insight across multiple initiatives that will also support the progressive global 3Rs Program to advance AbbVie's culture of ethical science promoting adoption of 3Rs technologies and methods where applicable.
Responsibilities:
  • Develops and achieves discipline strategy in alignment with functional goals and key scientific objectives with a strong focus on advancing on generating original emerging technical ideas and research or development strategies on technologies whose development, practical applications, or both are still largely unrealized, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) approaches that accelerate New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) discovery, qualification, and implementation.
  • Generate and lead new scientific proposals. Anticipate and critically evaluate scientific, regulatory and competitive advances related to new technological advances and respond with appropriate new strategies to maintain scientific leadership and business relevance.
  • Advances scientific expertise in emerging technologies and innovative 3Rs enabled solutions for NAMs. Proactively demonstrates leadership by advising and sharing knowledge and expert opinions with subordinates, peers, and senior management. Mentors and trains functional colleagues across all of R&D globally, including Preclinical Safety and Discovery, in alternative technologies and other 3Rs-driven study approaches, and assesses current and emerging business challenges enabling functional goal achievement.
  • Recognized and sought out as an expert in emerging technologies, such as digital biomarker technologies, translational imaging modalities and compound delivery and sample access technologies, within the company and extending externally.
  • Demonstrate creative 'out of the box' thinking to challenge the status quo and solve difficult problems, including challenges presented in the scoping, assessment, validation and deployment of AI/ML enabled business-worthy technologies. Champion the most promising new technologies and communicate to leadership the value of investment to achieve business goals and position our programs for success.
  • Primary author of publications, presentations, regulatory documents and/or primary inventor of patents including contributions that advance AI/ML-enabled NAMs, predictive modeling and innovative scientific methodologies.
  • Represent AbbVie and present at leading scientific conferences and host internal 3Rs/Emerging Technologies Symposia.
  • Serve as a member of the GAWC Leadership team and provide 3Rs leadership and expertise for our programs globally.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
  • PhD in biomedical research area of study preferred, with at least 10 years' experience with laboratory animals; or DVM/PhD with 8 years of experience in biomedical research.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a principal investigator, generating original technical ideas and research or development strategies.
  • Demonstrate creative 'out of the box' thinking to solve difficult technical problems and champion new technologies to achieve project goals.
  • Experienced and demonstrated success as primary author of publication, presentations, regulatory documents and/or primary inventor of patents.
  • Demonstrated scientific communication and presentation skills by presenting at leading scientific conferences.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, perform multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and stay abreast of relevant 3Rs literature as well as publish 3Rs literature.
  • Encourage innovation through leadership, set expectations, and hold people accountable for their actions. Communicate both successes and failures and promote change, where necessary, to more effectively drive results.
  • Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality. Competent in research methods and design using basic statistical methods and proficient in the use of statistical software (e.g. Graphpad JMP, Excel)
