Biomedical Physiology focuses on understanding biological systems and human body functions, often in research or healthcare settings. Biomedical Engineering involves designing and developing medical devices and technology, applying engineering principles to healthcare. While both fields overlap in healthcare and research, their core focuses differ: physiology emphasizes biological understanding, whereas engineering emphasizes technological innovation.

Is biomedical physiology a good major?

Biomedical physiology is a strong major for students interested in understanding human body functions and pursuing careers in healthcare, research, or medical fields. It provides a solid foundation for advanced studies such as medicine, physical therapy, or biomedical engineering, often requiring laboratory skills and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Graduates can find opportunities in hospitals, research labs, and biotech companies, though job prospects depend on additional qualifications and experience.

What can you do with a biomedical physiology degree?

A biomedical physiology degree prepares individuals for careers in healthcare, research, and medical device development. Graduates can work as clinical researchers, laboratory technicians, medical sales representatives, or pursue advanced roles in healthcare settings, often requiring knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and laboratory techniques.

What is biomedical physiology?

Biomedical physiology is the study of how the human body functions at the cellular, tissue, and organ levels, often involving understanding physiological processes and systems such as the cardiovascular, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. Professionals in this field may work in research, healthcare, or education, utilizing tools like laboratory equipment and requiring knowledge of biological sciences. It provides foundational knowledge for careers in medicine, biomedical research, and healthcare technology.

Job description

Team Description:
Kitware is seeking a Biomedical Modeler to join the Computer Vision team. In this role, you'll develop computational models of biological systems that support cutting-edge research in medical imaging, biomechanics, physiology, and digital health. You'll work closely with software developers, AI researchers, clinicians, and domain scientists to create validated models that answer challenging scientific and clinical questions.
About the Projects:
Kitware's employees have unique opportunities to interact and collaborate directly with customers, visit interesting customer sites, and participate in live field tests and demonstrations. Much of Kitware's work involves applying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and mechanistic modeling approaches to dynamic, real-world problems. We consider the work that we do on our government contracts as one of the ways that we give back to the community. We partner with premier government R&D agencies such as DARPA, IARPA, ARPA-H, DHA, AFRL, Army C5ISR, NOAA, and other branches of the US Government on a range of efforts, including prime contracts, SBIRs, and STTRs. In addition, we provide commercial services to companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Kitware employs an open source business model to foster extended, collaborative communities and to provide effective, flexible, and high-quality technical solutions.
In This Position You Will:
  • Develop computational and mathematical models of the human body and human physiology.
  • Create patient-specific models using medical imaging data (CT, MRI, ultrasound, microscopy, etc.).
  • Design and implement biomechanical, physiological, or multi-physics simulations.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate models into research software and production applications.
  • Validate models using experimental or clinical data.
  • Work directly with clinicians, researchers, and sponsors to understand technical requirements.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to Kitware's open source software ecosystem.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree + 2 years of experience or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • Experience developing computational or mathematical models of the human body.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ or Python (C++ preferred).
  • Experience with scientific computing and numerical methods.
  • Familiarity with medical imaging and image processing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Due to contractual requirements, only U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
  • If not already cleared TS/SCI, willingness and ability to apply for and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the Pulse Physiology Engine.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Biomechanics.
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Cardiovascular modeling.
  • Digital twins.
  • Multiscale modeling.
  • Medical image segmentation and registration.
  • AI or machine learning applied to biomedical data.
  • Grant proposal development and sponsored research.
