Job description
Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The University of Alberta, its buildings, labs, and research stations are primarily located on the traditional territory of Cree, Blackfoot, Metis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, and Ojibway/Saulteaux/Anishinaabe nations; lands that are now known as part of Treaties 6, 7, and 8 and homeland of the Metis. The University of Alberta respects the sovereignty, lands, histories, languages, knowledge systems, and cultures of First Nations, Metis and Inuit nations.
The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (FRM) invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position at the assistant or associate professor level in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD). This position is located on North Campus, in Edmonton, Alberta.
The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders is one of three departments in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. As the only freestanding faculty of rehabilitation medicine in North America, many unique opportunities exist for collaboration among professionals in speech-language pathology, occupational therapy and physical therapy. We offer a course-based Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MScSLP), a two-year program designed to develop leaders in speech-language pathology through excellence in research, education and citizenship. The program is designed to provide students with the academic and clinical skills required to be eligible for certification through Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and registration or licensure by provincial regulatory bodies. Using a distributed education model, the program is offered simultaneously on two campuses in Alberta: Edmonton (60 students) and Camrose (16 students), allowing for rural engagement and outreach opportunities. Our program prioritizes opportunities for experiential learning across the curriculum and cross-course integration. A thesis-based option within the MScSLP is also offered, as well as a combined MSc/PhD program that allows a select group of highly motivated students to complete the MScSLP and the PhD in rehabilitation sciences within a single integrated program of study. Faculty members in CSD are actively involved in the MSc and PhD thesis-based degree programs in Rehabilitation Science offered through the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.
The Department of CSD is among the largest speech-language pathology education programs in Canada. The Department currently consists of 10 tenure track and 10 academic teaching faculty members, supported by staff at the Department and Faculty level.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is home to a dynamic, collaborative and diverse group of researchers whose research programs span developmental language disorders and phonological development in children, literacy, multilingual language development, neurogenic communication disorders, speech science, hearing science and assessment and management of swallowing disorders. Faculty members employ diverse methodological approaches, including behavioural, clinical, neuroimaging, physiological, epidemiological and community-engaged research methodologies, and are internationally recognized for their contributions to understanding communication, cognition, and rehabilitation across the lifespan.
The Department benefits from strong partnerships with educational, healthcare centres and community organizations throughout Alberta, including close collaborations with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, one of Canada's leading rehabilitation and specialized care centres. These partnerships provide unique opportunities for clinically integrated research, knowledge mobilization, and access to diverse populations across the lifespan.
Faculty members maintain active collaborations across the University of Alberta and beyond through cross-appointments, joint research initiatives, and interdisciplinary training programs. Key partnerships include the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI), Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) and Sensory Motor Adaptive Rehabilitation Technology (SMART) Network. Researchers within the Department collaborate extensively with colleagues in Rehabilitation Medicine, Medicine & Dentistry, Psychology, Linguistics, Neuroscience, Education, Computing Science, and Biomedical Engineering.
The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine is committed to honouring our Treaty responsibilities by working alongside Indigenous partners to advance reconciliation and close the disproportionate wellness gap experienced by Indigenous Peoples. In partnership with Indigenous colleagues, the Faculty continues to integrate Indigenous Ways of Knowing into curriculum and research programs; opportunities to partner with Nations throughout Alberta exist within the work of the Department of CSD and the FRM.
Interested applicants must:
- Hold a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field;
- Be an independent investigator or have the potential to develop a successful research program as an independent investigator in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders;
A completed postdoctoral fellowship is an asset, as is eligibility for licensure by the professional college, the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA). Candidates with expertise in literacy, acquired communication disorders, fluency, or complex communication needs/autism spectrum disorders are encouraged to apply but all qualified candidates will be considered.
The candidate will be a collaborative member of the department and faculty and be committed to equity, diversity, inclusivity and Indigenous initiatives in research, teaching and service.
The U of A is committed to fostering equitable, diverse, and inclusive work and learning spaces (Changing the Story and Indigenous Initiatives) and encourages interest from candidates who can contribute to the further diversification of ideas in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders. The University of Alberta welcomes applications from all qualified persons, and encourages First Nations, Metis and Inuit persons, members of visible minority groups, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, and women to apply.
Application Instructions
Candidates are requested to prepare a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, and a statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity and Indigenous Initiatives (1-2 pages in length; see here for format: https://universityaffairs.ca/career-advice/how-to-structure-your-diversity-statement-for-your-academic-job-search/). The Committee will begin considering candidates starting at the end of November 2026, interviews will start January 2027, and the new faculty member to begin the appointment July 2027. This position will remain open until filled.
The successful candidate will be offered a tenured or tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, including a comprehensive benefits package.
The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule A of the collective agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
The successful candidate will have access to world-class research infrastructure, including advanced equipment/methods (MRI, fNIRS, EEG, ultrasound, EMG, eyetracking, etc.), clinical and community-based research environments, child and adult participant recruitment networks, and robust support for interdisciplinary and translation research. Faculty members are highly successful in securing funding from CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, Alberta Innovates, and charitable foundations, and actively mentor graduate students and postdoctoral scholars through nationally recognized training environments.
