What is biomedical engineering technology?

Biomedical Engineering Technology is a field that combines engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to design, develop, and maintain medical equipment and devices. Professionals in this field, called biomedical engineering technologists or technicians, ensure that healthcare facilities have safe and effective technology for diagnostics, treatment, and patient care. They are responsible for installing, calibrating, repairing, and testing medical equipment such as imaging machines, patient monitors, and laboratory instruments. Their work supports doctors and nurses by ensuring that all medical devices function reliably and safely.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a biomedical engineering technologist?

Professionals in Biomedical Engineering Technology typically spend their days installing, calibrating, and maintaining medical equipment such as imaging devices, patient monitors, and life-support systems. They also troubleshoot and repair technical issues, perform routine safety checks, and document all service activities to comply with health regulations. Collaboration with healthcare staff is common to ensure equipment meets clinical needs and to provide user training. The role often involves balancing hands-on technical work with clear communication and meticulous record-keeping.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biomedical engineering technologist?

To thrive as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in electronics, biology, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree or diploma in biomedical engineering technology. Familiarity with medical equipment, diagnostic tools, and industry standards such as ISO 13485 or certification from organizations like AAMI is often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure the safety, reliability, and optimal performance of critical medical devices in healthcare environments.

What is the difference between Biomedical Engineering Technology vs Biomedical Engineering?

AspectBiomedical Engineering TechnologyBiomedical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's degree or technical certificationBachelor's degree or higher in biomedical engineering
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, medical device companiesResearch labs, design firms, healthcare facilities
Employer & Industry UsageMedical equipment maintenance, technical supportDevice design, research, development

Biomedical Engineering Technicians focus on maintaining and repairing medical equipment, often with technical certifications. Biomedical Engineers are involved in designing and developing new medical devices, typically requiring a bachelor's degree or higher. Both roles work closely within healthcare and medical device industries but differ in their focus and educational requirements.

What can I do with a biomedical engineering technology degree?

A biomedical engineering technology degree prepares individuals for roles such as biomedical equipment technicians, clinical engineers, or medical device specialists. These professionals install, maintain, and repair medical equipment, often working in hospitals or healthcare facilities, and may require certifications like the Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET).

What does a biomedical engineering technologist do?

A biomedical engineering technologist maintains, tests, and repairs medical equipment used in healthcare settings. They often work with devices such as imaging systems, patient monitors, and diagnostic tools, ensuring safety and proper functionality. The role requires technical skills, knowledge of biomedical systems, and often certification or training in medical technology.

What jobs can you get with a biomedical engineering technology?

A biomedical engineering technologist can work in hospitals, medical device companies, or research labs, performing maintenance, calibration, and repair of medical equipment. They often assist in testing and troubleshooting devices, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and may hold roles such as clinical engineer, biomedical technician, or medical equipment specialist.
