Biomedical Engineering Technicians focus on maintaining and repairing medical equipment, often with technical certifications. Biomedical Engineers are involved in designing and developing new medical devices, typically requiring a bachelor's degree or higher. Both roles work closely within healthcare and medical device industries but differ in their focus and educational requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in electronics, biology, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree or diploma in biomedical engineering technology. Familiarity with medical equipment, diagnostic tools, and industry standards such as ISO 13485 or certification from organizations like AAMI is often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure the safety, reliability, and optimal performance of critical medical devices in healthcare environments.

What are some typical daily responsibilities for someone working in Biomedical Engineering Technology?

Professionals in Biomedical Engineering Technology typically spend their days installing, calibrating, and maintaining medical equipment such as imaging devices, patient monitors, and life-support systems. They also troubleshoot and repair technical issues, perform routine safety checks, and document all service activities to comply with health regulations. Collaboration with healthcare staff is common to ensure equipment meets clinical needs and to provide user training. The role often involves balancing hands-on technical work with clear communication and meticulous record-keeping.

What is Biomedical Engineering Technology?

Biomedical Engineering Technology is a field that combines engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to design, develop, and maintain medical equipment and devices. Professionals in this field, called biomedical engineering technologists or technicians, ensure that healthcare facilities have safe and effective technology for diagnostics, treatment, and patient care. They are responsible for installing, calibrating, repairing, and testing medical equipment such as imaging machines, patient monitors, and laboratory instruments. Their work supports doctors and nurses by ensuring that all medical devices function reliably and safely.

Teledyne MEMS is one of the world's leading pure-play MEMS foundries, partnering with global innovators to bring cutting-edge technologies to market - from biomedical devices to optical and RF microsystems. As our business grows, we're looking for a Senior Project Manager to lead high-impact development programs and help elevate the performance of our Project Management Office.

About the Role
As a Senior Project Manager, you will take ownership of planning and executing complex MEMS development projects, guiding them from concept through to manufacturing. You will lead cross-functional teams of engineers and scientists, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and at high quality.

Beyond execution, you'll play a key role in improving how we work - enhancing project management systems, strengthening team effectiveness, and driving continuous improvement across the organization.

What You'll Do

  • Lead execution of MEMS development programs, transferring customer prototypes into manufacturing

  • Manage complex, cross-functional project teams across engineering, operations, and business functions

  • Provide clear visibility to plant leadership on project status, risks, and forecasts

  • Drive improvements in project execution - reducing timelines, lowering costs, and improving quality

  • Facilitate key project activities including design reviews, gate reviews, and problem-solving sessions

  • Strengthen application of quality frameworks (PFMEA, MSA, control plans, SPC)

  • Build strong customer relationships and lead business review meetings

  • Mentor and develop junior project managers

  • Lead strategic improvement initiatives to advance project management systems and practice

Who We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field

  • 5+ years of project management experience, preferably in MEMS, semiconductor, or advanced manufacturing

  • Proven ability to lead complex technical projects and deliver results

  • Strong background working in manufacturing and cross-functional engineering environments

  • Experience with integration or product engineering is an asset

  • PMP certification or equivalent training is an asset

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills

  • A reputation for getting things done and driving results

Why Join Teledyne MEMS?

  • Lead cutting-edge MEMS programs with global impact

  • Work alongside highly skilled engineers and technical experts

  • Influence and improve how projects are executed across the organization

  • Take on a high-visibility leadership role with opportunities for continued growth
