What is a biomedical engineering team leader?

Biomedical Engineering Team Leaders are professionals who oversee teams of biomedical engineers working on the design, development, testing, and maintenance of medical devices and healthcare technologies. They coordinate projects, ensure compliance with industry standards, and facilitate communication between technical teams, healthcare professionals, and management. Their role includes mentoring team members, managing resources, and ensuring that projects meet deadlines and quality requirements.

How does a biomedical engineering team leader typically collaborate with healthcare professionals and other departments?

A Biomedical Engineering Team Leader frequently works alongside clinical staff, hospital administrators, and technical teams to ensure that medical devices and systems meet both operational and regulatory standards. They facilitate communication between engineers and healthcare professionals to address equipment needs, troubleshoot technical challenges, and implement new technologies. This role often requires leading cross-functional meetings, coordinating training sessions, and managing project timelines to optimize patient care and equipment performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biomedical engineering team leader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biomedical Engineering Team Leader, you need a solid background in biomedical engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a relevant degree and experience in the field. Familiarity with medical device regulations, quality management systems (such as ISO 13485), and design software like CAD is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team coordination skills help you motivate teams and manage cross-functional projects. These abilities ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient development of medical technologies, driving team success and innovation.

  • Directly supervise, coach, train, and develop a team of approximately 15 BMETs/medical device technicians.
  • Oversee the repair, preventive maintenance, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and upgrades of medical devices and biomedical equipment.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex technical issues and support technicians with advanced troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Manage workflow, staffing, workload prioritization, and resource allocation to maximize technician productivity and service quality.
  • Ensure all technical work is completed according to established procedures, manufacturer specifications, and quality standards.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable FDA, ISO, and medical device quality requirements.
  • Oversee technician training, competency programs, certifications, and technical development.
  • Develop and coordinate technical training programs for biomedical engineers, BMETs, and medical device customers.
  • Partner with Service Administration to ensure device history records, calibration records, repair documentation, and service records are complete and audit-ready.
  • Analyze service metrics, equipment performance, customer feedback, and operational trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, service quality, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Partner with the Director of Technical Services and cross-functional teams on technical issues, new product introductions, and departmental initiatives.
  • Maintain hands-on technical proficiency by performing advanced medical device repairs, testing, calibration, hardware upgrades, and software updates when needed.
  • Support the Director with departmental planning, reporting, quality investigations, corrective actions, and strategic initiatives.

Ideal Background

  • 7+ years of progressive technical experience in the medical device, biomedical, clinical engineering, or healthcare technology industry.
  • Current or recent experience as a BMET, Biomedical Engineer, Clinical Engineer, Medical Device Technician, or Field Service Technician.
  • Several years of supervisory/management experience is required, specifically leading technical service or biomedical personnel.
  • Experience supervising field service technicians is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in a hospital biomedical engineering/clinical engineering department is highly relevant.
  • Strong electrical/electronics background with the ability to troubleshoot complex medical equipment.
  • Electrosurgical equipment experience is highly relevant.
