How much do biology computer science jobs pay per year?
What is a biology computer science?
A Biology Computer Science job integrates principles of biology and computational techniques to analyze biological data, develop bioinformatics tools, and solve complex biological problems. Professionals in this field may work in genomics, drug discovery, systems biology, or healthcare technology. They utilize programming, machine learning, and data analysis to interpret biological processes. Common roles include bioinformaticians, computational biologists, and biotech software developers. This interdisciplinary field is crucial for advancements in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in biology computer science?
To thrive in a Biology Computer Science role, you need a strong background in both biological sciences and computer science, often supported by a degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or R), data analysis software, and biological databases is essential, and specialized certifications in bioinformatics can be advantageous. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals translate complex biological data into actionable insights. These capabilities enable success by bridging the gap between computational analysis and biological research, driving innovation in life sciences.
What types of projects do professionals in biology computer science typically work on?
Professionals in Biology Computer Science often work on projects involving the analysis of large biological datasets, such as genome sequencing, protein structure prediction, or population genetics studies. They may develop algorithms, create data visualization tools, or collaborate with laboratory researchers to interpret results. Day-to-day work often involves coding, statistical analysis, and frequent interdisciplinary meetings with biologists, bioinformaticians, and IT specialists. This collaborative environment offers opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge discoveries and continually expand technical skills, making the field both intellectually rewarding and dynamic.

Job description
The Center for Computational Molecular Biology (CCMB) and the Department of Computer Science at Brown University invite applications for a tenure-track faculty member who develops and applies computational approaches to important biological questions. We seek an innovative and accomplished scientist whose research program is motivated by understanding biological systems (for example, but not limited to: multi-omics and gene regulatory networks; RNA structure, expression, and post-transcriptional modifications; statistical and population genetics; bioinformatics; protein structure and dynamics; and computational neuroscience). An especial emphasis will be placed on candidates seeking to conduct research on RNA given Brown's recent large-scale investments in its new Guiliani RNA Center.
The successful candidate will be a core faculty member of CCMB, which is part of the larger Brown Data Science Institute, with a tenure home in the Department of Computer Science and strong connections to our Division of Biology and Medicine, and will have opportunities to conduct undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Computational Biology degree programs and Department of Computer Science. The prime intellectual mission of CCMB is to promote the development, implementation, and application of quantitative methods to foundational questions in the biological and medical sciences. The research programs of the core faculty in CCMB lie fundamentally at the intersection of computer science, evolutionary biology, mathematics, statistics, and molecular and cellular biology.
The research challenges at the heart of CCMB are a rich source of mathematical and computational problems motivated by the complex nature of genomes, disease processes, and evolutionary relationships. These challenges are both multi-scale (with units of interest ranging from molecules to communities of organisms) and large-scale (data-intensive, in part due to advances in sequencing technologies).
Brown University is located in Providence, RI, close to Narragansett Bay, an hour from Boston and about three hours from New York City. Providence has been consistently rated as among the Northeast's most livable cities and is home to diverse intellectual, artistic, and business communities.
Qualifications
This is a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank. Applications will only be considered at the Assistant Professor level. This search is conducted jointly with the Department of Computer Science (CS), where the successful candidate's tenure home will reside. Qualifications include a PhD degree in a related field (e.g., computational biology, computer science, mathematics, statistics, biochemistry, computational biochemistry) and strong research, mentoring, and teaching credentials.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following materials: cover letter; current curriculum vitae; the following statements: 1) research statement; 2) teaching statement; and contact information for three references. Candidates should address in their materials (cover letter or statements) how they would contribute to the research and/or teaching missions of our diverse and inclusive university community.
Applications will be considered until the position is filled, but we strongly encourage the candidates to submit complete applications (including reference letters) by October 15th for full consideration.
Inquiries may be addressed to ruth_crane@brown.edu
