Job description

Computercraft is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to lead the SRA Bioinformatics team supporting the NIH Sequence Read Archive (SRA), the world's largest publicly accessible repository for genomic sequencing data. For more than three decades, Computercraft has partnered with federal health and scientific agencies to deliver advanced information technology, data management, and scientific computing solutions that support critical research and public health initiatives.
In this role, the successful candidate will join a collaborative team supporting the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine and will lead the development of new software, tools, and workflows that improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse (FAIR) of SRA data and enhance its impact on scientific research and public health. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside computational biologists and computer scientists on large-scale bioinformatics initiatives that directly support scientific discovery and the broader research community. This is a hybrid role with on-site work in Bethesda, MD.
Job Responsibilities
  • Work with SRA leadership to develop product vision, goals, and strategic roadmaps and lead the execution
  • Lead team through a complete product lifecycle from discovery to delivery
  • Lead data analysis and user research efforts and utilize findings in the development of product requirements and to inform objective decision making
  • Prioritize product team actions and provide clear guidance to create incremental value in an Agile environment
  • Develop partnerships and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders to improve data usability and impact

Required Skills/Experience
  • Doctorate-level degree in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computational biology, data science, computer science, information technology, or a similar field
  • Conceptual knowledge of genomics, molecular biology, and computational biology
  • Practical knowledge of bioinformatics, bioinformatic tools, and the application of genomic sequencing data to biomedical and other scientific use cases
  • Experience leading teams, setting team goals, prioritizing work based on available information and stakeholder needs, and utilizing metrics to measure success
  • Experience providing an effective work environment
  • The ability to troubleshoot technical and staffing roadblocks and mitigate risks
  • Experience in diplomatically resolving conflicting priorities from multiple user groups and technical stakeholders
  • The ability to troubleshoot technical and staffing roadblocks and mitigate risks
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal engagement, networking, and collaboration skills

Desired Skills/Experience
  • Experience working with SRA or similar sequence databases and applying next generation sequencing data to biological problems
  • Experience serving in the capacity of post-doctorate Investigator, Product Owner, or Product Manager
  • Familiarity and commitment to FAIR data practices
  • Familiarity or experience working in an Agile environment
  • Familiarity with data storage and/or processing in commercial cloud platforms like AWS or GCP
  • Working familiarity with one or more scripting languages
  • Working familiarity with large SQL databases
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, unit tests, integration, and regression testing

Clearance Requirement: Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
The compensation for this position will be based on the experience of the successful candidate. The expected pay range for this position is $120,000 to $160,000 annually.
Computercraft offers an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and disability and life insurance; a 401(k) plan with matching; paid leave starting at 128 hours/year for the first 3 years of employment; and 11 paid holidays.
