Bioinformatics Assistant information

What are Bioinformatics Assistants?

Bioinformatics Assistants are professionals who support bioinformatics projects by managing, analyzing, and interpreting biological data using computational tools and software. They often work under the supervision of bioinformaticians or researchers, assisting with tasks such as data entry, quality control, running basic analyses, and maintaining databases. Their work is essential in fields like genomics, proteomics, and biomedical research, where large datasets need to be processed efficiently. A Bioinformatics Assistant typically has a background in biology, computer science, or a related field, and is familiar with common bioinformatics software and programming languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bioinformatics Assistant, and why are they important?

A Bioinformatics Assistant needs a solid background in biology, statistics, and programming, often supported by a degree in bioinformatics or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Python, R, BLAST, and data analysis platforms, as well as experience working with genomic databases, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These competencies enable accurate data analysis, efficient collaboration with research teams, and the generation of meaningful biological insights.

How does a Bioinformatics Assistant typically collaborate with researchers and other team members on projects?

As a Bioinformatics Assistant, you will work closely with researchers, data scientists, and laboratory personnel to support ongoing projects. Your primary role often involves processing and analyzing large-scale biological data, helping translate raw datasets into meaningful insights. Collaboration usually entails regular meetings to discuss project goals, troubleshooting analysis pipelines, and integrating feedback from team members. Strong communication skills and a willingness to adapt to evolving project needs are essential for success in this dynamic and interdisciplinary environment.

The primary responsibilities for this position including ‘wet lab’ research activities as determined by the project needs (40%), training other lab members in experimental tasks (30%), and animal husbandry and lab maintenance tasks (30%). This is a full-time position, with the expectation of 40 hours/week. The initial appointment will have a 6-month probationary period, and then extended to one year based on performance. The position is renewable pending available funding.

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will primarily facilitate research activities for a National Science Foundation-funded project investigating craniofacial and sensory evolution. In collaboration with the laboratory head, this position involves training in and performing experimentation, training graduate and undergraduate students, maintenance of our live animal colony, and general lab housekeeping duties.

Minimum Requirements

Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience with fish husbandry, routine molecular techniques (e.g., nucleic acid extraction and cloning, PCR amplification) and “dry lab” techniques (e.g., basic bioinformatic analyses). The successful candidate must be detail-oriented with excellent organization and communication skills.

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
