What is a biogas job?

Biogas jobs refer to roles involved in the production, management, and utilization of biogas—a renewable energy source produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, and food waste. These jobs can include positions like plant operators, engineers, technicians, researchers, and project managers. Professionals in this field work to design, operate, and maintain biogas plants, ensure regulatory compliance, and contribute to sustainable energy solutions. Biogas careers are found in energy companies, agricultural businesses, waste management organizations, and environmental consultancies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work in biogas?

To thrive as a Biogas Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, environmental, or mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and practical experience in renewable energy projects. Familiarity with biogas plant design software, process control systems, and industry certifications like Certified Energy Manager (CEM) are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help professionals lead projects and navigate regulatory requirements. These competences ensure the safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of biogas facilities, contributing to energy goals and environmental compliance.

What are common challenges in biogas production and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in biogas production often encounter challenges such as feedstock variability, maintaining optimal digester conditions, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Addressing these challenges involves closely monitoring feedstock quality, regularly testing and adjusting process parameters like temperature and pH, and staying up-to-date with regulatory requirements. Collaboration with agricultural suppliers, laboratory technicians, and environmental specialists is key to troubleshooting issues and maintaining efficient, compliant operations.

What is the difference between Biogas vs Biogas Technician?

AspectBiogasBiogas Technician
CredentialsTypically no specific certification required, but knowledge of renewable energy is beneficialOften requires certifications in renewable energy, HVAC, or mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentResearch facilities, biogas plants, renewable energy sitesOperational sites, maintenance facilities, installation environments
Industry UsageIndustry term for the renewable energy source itselfJob role focused on maintaining and operating biogas systems

Biogas refers to the renewable energy source produced from organic waste, while a Biogas Technician is a professional responsible for maintaining and operating biogas systems. The technician role requires specific technical certifications and hands-on experience, whereas biogas as a term describes the energy produced. Understanding both helps in career planning and industry comprehension.

Though our business has grown, our family values remain our foundation. We seek to hire dedicated individuals who are committed to learning and share our desire to be the best. At JBS, our team members are our most important asset and feeding the world is our greatest goal. The Plainwell facility began operations in 1918 under the Murray Packing company. In the 1960's, it was acquired by Murco and in 1998 by Packerland. In 2000, Packerland was acquired by Smithfield. In 2010, the facility joined the JBS USA family.
Plainwell is the only JBS plant with Modified Atmospheric Packaging (MAP), a packaging process that changes oxygen levels to extend shelf-life. The MAP process is a part of the Plainwell ground beef operation. Plainwell is also one of the few plants that produces ground beef patties. Over one million lbs (450,000 kg) of beef are produced each day. The Plainwell facility produces biogas in an anaerobic lagoon and uses it in place of natural gas to heat a portion of the water used in the plant. The facility was recognized by the American Meat Institute as a Tier 3 facility for its accomplishments with ISO 14001. Plainwell recently built a $31 million distribution center (85,000 ft²) with a 55,000 box capacity.
