Biofilm Research information

What is a biofilm research?

A Biofilm Research job involves studying communities of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and produce a protective matrix. Researchers investigate biofilm formation, structure, and behavior to understand their role in medical, industrial, and environmental settings. This work helps develop strategies to control harmful biofilms in healthcare or enhance beneficial biofilms in biotechnology. Responsibilities may include laboratory experiments, data analysis, and developing antimicrobial treatments or biofilm-resistant materials.

What are some typical challenges faced in biofilm research roles?

Working in Biofilm Research often involves tackling complex and dynamic microbial systems that can be difficult to analyze and manipulate. Researchers frequently encounter challenges with reproducibility, contamination, and interpreting results from intricate biological processes. Many projects require creative problem-solving, troubleshooting of experimental protocols, and a willingness to adapt when experiments do not go as planned. Collaborating with specialists from different fields, such as chemistry, engineering, or clinical medicine, is common and helps address the multifaceted nature of biofilm behavior. Being proactive and communicative with your team is essential for overcoming obstacles and advancing scientific understanding in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in biofilm research?

To thrive in Biofilm Research, you need a strong background in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related life sciences field, along with experience in laboratory research and data analysis. Familiarity with laboratory techniques like microscopy, cell culture, molecular assays, and tools such as MATLAB or R for data evaluation is often required. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills help researchers effectively investigate complex biological systems and share findings with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are essential for making meaningful progress in understanding and controlling biofilms in medical, industrial, or environmental contexts.

Job Title:
Post Doctoral Scholar
Department:
Pharmacy | Office of the Dean
The Kebriaei Laboratory in the College of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to join a newly funded NIH R01 project focused on the cefazolin inoculum effect (CzIE) in methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). This multi-center study will investigate the prevalence, molecular mechanisms, and clinical impact of CzIE across ten geographically diverse medical centers in the United States. The overarching goal is to improve understanding of antibiotic treatment failure and advance precision antimicrobial therapy for invasive MSSA infections.
The successful candidate will lead and contribute to a variety of translational research activities, including antimicrobial susceptibility testing, inoculum effect characterization, molecular microbiology studies, β-lactamase expression analyses, biofilm assays, whole-genome sequencing, and integration of microbiological and clinical data. The position offers unique opportunities to collaborate with investigators across multiple institutions and work at the intersection of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, and antimicrobial pharmacology.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D., Pharm.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Infectious Diseases, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field
  • Strong record of scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience with bacterial culture techniques and microbiological assays
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary research team

Desired Experience:
  • Experience with antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular microbiology, qPCR, biofilm assays, or bacterial genomics, bioinformatics
  • Familiarity with antimicrobial pharmacology, antimicrobial resistance, or host-pathogen interactions
  • Experience with bioinformatics, statistical analysis, or clinical/translational research

Additional Information:
This position is funded on a year-to-year basis and is initially available for one year. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory performance, outstanding writing/experimental/analytical skills and publications.
Research Environment
The Kebriaei Laboratory is committed to fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive research environment. Trainees receive mentorship in experimental design, scientific communication, manuscript preparation, grant writing, and career development. The laboratory maintains active collaborations with clinical microbiologists, infectious diseases physicians, and scientists across multiple institutions, providing exceptional opportunities for professional growth and networking.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with NIH guidelines and experience
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and core laboratories
  • Opportunities to present research at national and international scientific meetings
  • Structured mentoring and professional development
