Job Description:
Kansas City University (KCU) is searching for a Director of Bioethics. The successful candidate will be a scholar who provides intellectual and administrative leadership for the Bioethics faculty on the Kansas City and Joplin campuses. This leader is an ethicist and humanist with relevant academic credentials and experience in Bioethics. The Director will be responsible for academic programming and administrative operations for sustaining and growing the Master of Arts in Bioethics (MA Bioethics) program. The director will lead efforts in creating a stand-alone MA Bioethics program. The Director will participate in teaching and ensure the delivery of the MA Bioethics degree as well as the integration and delivery of Bioethics content into all degree programs and affiliated educational programs of KCU. The Director will demonstrate excellence in leadership, program development, teaching, inclusive of online courses, scholarly work, and professional service. A background of research and publication is desirable. Bioethics faculty on both campuses report to the Director, who reports to the KC Campus Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Administrative leadership of all Bioethics faculty (full-time and part-time), lecturers and other staff
  • Administrative oversight of all bioethics curriculum, both in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)degree program and the MA in Bioethics degree program
  • Provides intellectual direction and infrastructural capability to ensure sustainability and growth of Bioethics curriculum and programs on both campuses, and ultimately online
  • Experience with accreditation
  • Annual evaluation of full-time faculty and review of adjunct faculty
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility through effective budget management
  • Planning and leading an annual department retreat when indicated
  • Conducts regular meetings of faculty and staff
  • Recruitment and retention of Bioethics full, part-time and adjunct faculty
  • Course directs one or more MA Bioethics and DO bioethics courses
  • Oversees MA Bioethics degree program and course delivery
  • Provides bioethics leadership and teaching for regional clinical residency/fellowship programs, ethics grand rounds, community programs, etc.
  • Serves as an advisor to MA Bioethics and DO program-only students
  • Thesis advising of MA Bioethics students
  • Oversees faculty development of MA bioethics faculty
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on recruitment and retention of MA bioethics students
  • Serves on University committees as assigned
  • Participates in COM Leadership meetings, Faculty Senate, KCU Board meetings, Town Hall meetings, White Coat , White Coat ceremonies, Commencement, Homecoming and other campus events
  • Engages with scholarly activities, including dissemination in one or more of the following areas: bioethics, health humanities, professionalism

Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD, DO, MD or other terminal degree of relevance to Bioethics
  • A minimum of five years post-doctoral teaching at a graduate or professional level
  • Record commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Research, publications, and grant-writing experience are highly preferred
