Job Summary
The Advanced Biotherapeutics Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan seeks a full-time Research Laboratory Specialist Associate to support interdisciplinary research at the interface of synthetic biology, microbiology, immunology, cancer biology, and engineered live biotherapeutics. The successful candidate will assist with molecular biology and microbiology experiments, laboratory organization, and research operations.
Responsibilities*
- Perform and support standard molecular biology and microbiology experiments, including PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, plasmid preparation, cloning support, bacterial transformation, colony screening, and genotyping.
- Maintain bacterial strains, plasmids, reagents, and organized sample inventories
- Prepare bacterial cultures, media, buffers, and other routine laboratory reagents.
- Assist with mouse-colony documentation, periodic genotype verification, and breeder-health record coordination under approved protocols and institutional guidance.
- Support sample collection, processing, labeling, storage, and data organization.
- Maintain accurate lab notebooks, shared records, and inventory databases.
- Place and track orders, receive and organize supplies, maintain common lab spaces, and help coordinate equipment/service records.
- Support compliance with laboratory safety, biosafety, and animal research procedures.
- Work collaboratively with the PI, senior research staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry or a closely related field.
- 1-3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Careful attention to detail, strong organizational skills, record-keeping and communication skills.
- Ability to follow established protocols, work independently after training, and contribute effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn new laboratory methods.
- Commitment to accurate documentation, reliable follow-through, and safe laboratory practices.
Desired Qualifications*
- Prior experience with molecular biology techniques, bacterial culture, PCR/qPCR, cloning, genotyping, mouse colony record keeping, BSL-2 laboratory practices, ordering/inventory systems, shared laboratory organization, and/or research laboratory operations.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, or animal research procedures is helpful but not required.

**This is a one-year term-limited position with the possibility of extension based upon need and funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
