As of Jul 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for bioanalytical chemist in the United States is $30.99, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $35.58 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a bioanalytical chemist do?

A bioanalytical chemist specializes in developing and applying laboratory techniques to measure drugs, biological molecules, and other compounds in biological samples. They use tools like chromatography and mass spectrometry to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of pharmaceuticals, often working in regulated environments that require attention to detail and compliance with industry standards.

What jobs can you do with bio and chem?

A Bioanalytical Chemist can work in pharmaceutical, biotech, environmental, or clinical laboratories, performing tasks such as method development, sample analysis, and quality control. Skills in chromatography, mass spectrometry, and data interpretation are essential, and roles may include research scientist, quality assurance specialist, or regulatory analyst.

What is the highest paid chemist job?

The highest paid chemist roles are often in pharmaceutical research, chemical engineering, or executive positions such as Chief Scientific Officer, with salaries exceeding $150,000 annually. Senior-level positions requiring advanced expertise, management skills, and often a PhD tend to offer the highest compensation in the chemistry field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bioanalytical Chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bioanalytical Chemist, you need a solid background in chemistry or biochemistry, typically with at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Expertise with analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS, along with familiarity with GLP/GMP standards and possibly certification in laboratory safety, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in analyzing complex biological samples. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate data generation, regulatory compliance, and successful collaboration in research or pharmaceutical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by a Bioanalytical Chemist in maintaining data integrity during experiments?

Bioanalytical Chemists often encounter challenges in ensuring data integrity due to the complexity of biological samples and the sensitivity of analytical instruments. Strict adherence to protocols, meticulous documentation, and regular instrument calibration are essential to minimize errors and ensure reproducibility. Additionally, working in a regulated environment, such as following Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or FDA guidelines, requires thorough record-keeping and validation of methods, which can be time-consuming but is crucial for the credibility of results.

What jobs can a bio-chem major get?

A bioanalytical chemist with a biochemistry background can work in roles such as laboratory scientist, research associate, quality control analyst, or regulatory affairs specialist. These positions often require skills in laboratory techniques, data analysis, and familiarity with analytical instruments like HPLC or mass spectrometry.
