Job description

Company Description The Department of Soil & Crop Sciences at Texas A&M University develops future agricultural leaders through strong programs in education, research, and Extension. The department emphasizes hands-on learning and innovative research to tackle real-world challenges in agriculture and natural resource stewardship. Close collaboration with industry partners supports impactful discoveries and prepares graduates for successful careers in agricultural and environmental fields.
Role Description This full-time, on-site Research Technician role is based in Brownwood, TX and supports field, greenhouse, and laboratory research in soil and crop sciences. The position assists with setting up and maintaining experiments, including plot preparation, planting, data collection, sample handling, and record keeping. Daily tasks may include operating and maintaining basic agricultural and laboratory equipment, monitoring plant growth and soil conditions, and following established research protocols. The Research Technician will help organize data, maintain inventories and supplies, and contribute to routine reporting under the guidance of research faculty and staff. The role requires adherence to safety procedures, collaboration with team members, and flexibility to work outdoors in varying conditions during peak field seasons.
Qualifications
  • Foundational knowledge of agronomy, soil science, crop production, or related agricultural disciplines.
  • Experience with field research activities such as plot layout, planting, sampling, and data collection.
  • Ability to operate and perform basic maintenance on agricultural and laboratory equipment (e.g., small machinery, hand tools, measuring instruments).
  • Strong observational, data recording, and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Willingness and physical ability to work outdoors in variable weather, including lifting, bending, and extended periods of fieldwork.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
  • Commitment to safety, following established protocols, and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in agriculture, soil science, plant science, environmental science, or a related field preferred; relevant work experience may substitute.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation; familiarity with spreadsheets or data management software is beneficial.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field sites when needed.
