Job description

Summary

The Department of Biology at Barry University is seeking Student Tutors for the following courses, including but not limited to: BIO-110, BIO-112, BIO-216, BIO-220, BIO-225, BIO-230, BIO-240, BIO-253, BIO-300, BIO-303, BIO-307, BIO-308, BIO-310, BIO-312, BIO-313, BIO-316, BIO-325, BIO-328, BIO-330, BIO-334, BIO-335, BIO-337, BIO-339, BIO-341, BIO-346, BIO-440, BIO-450, BIO-451, BIO-454.

This position is to be performed face-to-face.

Essential Functions

Assists students in reaching a better understanding of their Biology coursework by:

  • Introducing self to class and explaining when and where tutoring services will be offered.

  • Communicating effectively and professionally in order to clarify content presented in the lecture and laboratory environments.

  • Leading review sessions and being willing to work with individuals as well as in a group setting.

  • Adhering to a set schedule of available hours which will be posted throughout the department.

Provide teaching support to instructors by:

  • Conferring and planning with professors.

  • Becoming enrolled as a user on the Blackboard course website.

  • Obtaining copies of necessary texts, notes, and syllabi to be used as a reference.

Maintains frequent communication and proper documentation of academic services by:

  • Utilizing the Barry email service to stay in contact with students.

  • Retain copies of correspondence from students.

  • Maintaining and submitting sign in sheets and log of study sessions.

  • Notifying supervisor in advance of absences and arranging for coverage

  • Submit new hire paperwork and timesheets accurately and timely.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • 0-12 months of related experience

  • Must be able to troubleshoot and problem solve academic questions related to the subject being tutored as well as inspire students to discover scientific findings and solutions on their own

  • Must apply time management and scientific principles when working with students

  • Must possess basic computer skills and be familiar with lab equipment.

  • Must be able to type, email, alphabetize, label, and log

  • Should be familiar with the procedures and protocol of necessary lab equipment and supplies

  • Must be able to express written ideas well and must respectfully and clearly communicate with students in a classroom and individual instruction setting

  • Must have earned a grade of "A" in subject area
