Bio Manufacturing information

What is bio manufacturing?

Bio manufacturing, also known as biomanufacturing, is the process of using biological systems like cells or enzymes to produce commercial products such as medicines, vaccines, biofuels, and food ingredients. This field combines biology, engineering, and technology to create products in a controlled and scalable way, often using fermentation or cell culture techniques. Biomanufacturing plays a critical role in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and food industries, enabling the production of complex molecules that are difficult to synthesize chemically. Professionals in this field work on developing, optimizing, and scaling up these biological processes to ensure high-quality and cost-effective product output.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in bio manufacturing?

To thrive in Bio Manufacturing, you need a solid background in biology, chemistry, or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), bioprocessing equipment, and quality control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork skills help individuals excel in this environment. These competencies are crucial for ensuring product quality, regulatory compliance, and efficient production in the biotechnology industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in bio manufacturing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in bio manufacturing often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict quality control standards, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Addressing these challenges involves continuous training, staying updated on industry best practices, and fostering strong communication within cross-functional teams. Many companies also encourage ongoing professional development and provide resources to help employees stay current with regulations and technological advancements.

What is the difference between Bio Manufacturing vs Bioprocess Technician?

AspectBio ManufacturingBioprocess Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology, Biology, or related fieldOften requires a diploma or associate degree in Biotechnology or related field
Work EnvironmentManufacturing facilities, laboratories, cleanroomsProduction floors, laboratories, cleanrooms
Industry UsageUsed broadly across biotech, pharmaceutical, and biopharmaceutical companiesPrimarily in biotech and pharmaceutical manufacturing
Job FocusOversees entire manufacturing processes, quality control, and compliancePerforms specific tasks in bioprocessing, equipment operation, and sample testing

Bio Manufacturing involves overseeing the entire production process in biotech and pharmaceutical industries, often requiring higher-level degrees and responsibilities. Bioprocess Technicians focus on executing specific bioprocessing tasks, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles work in similar environments but differ in scope and qualifications.

Job description

By joining Bio-Techne, you'll join a company with a powerful and positive purpose of enabling cutting-edge research in Life Sciences and Clinical Diagnostics. Bio-Techne, and all of its brands, provides tools for researchers to further treat and prevent disease worldwide.

Pay Range:

$115,100.00 - $189,200.00

Position Summary:

Bio-Techne is seeking an innovative and experienced Staff Scientist to join our team as a key technical leader with a focus on Process Optimization, initially supporting the Maurice product line. Positioned within the Research and Development Science group (R&D Science), this role bridges assay science, hardware engineering, consumables design, manufacturing, and enduser application teams to ensure robust real-world performance of instruments, reusable consumables, and reagents.

The Staff Scientist will lead root cause analysis (RCA) and troubleshooting to resolve product performance issues, distinguishing assay, design, and manufacturing drivers through data analysis and targeted experimentation. The role also defines and executes process optimization and validation strategies, supports manufacturing scaleup, and grows into a recognized subject matter expert for the capillary electrophoresisbased Maurice platform, providing crossfunctional technical guidance from development through customer support. Ideal candidates bring deep understanding and hands-on experience in lifescience consumables or instrumentation, strong assay troubleshooting abilities, advanced problemsolving and statistical skills, and a proven track record of driving crossdisciplinary technical investigations to resolution.

If you want to make better analytical tools to enable our customers to make better medicines, apply today.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the interplay between assay/reagents, hardware, and production processes and act as a technical lead in root cause analysis (RCA) investigations.

  • Define and execute validation plans for design or process changes based on customer usage data and patterns related to product failures or performance variability.

  • Interface with development and manufacturing teams to evaluate and implement reagent or consumable designs, manufacturing protocols, and process controls.

  • Collaborate closely with development scientists/engineers and applications teams to thoroughly understand and troubleshoot end-user workflows, challenges, and assay requirements. May include interactions directly with customers.

  • Support continuous improvement by optimizing, validating and implementing manufacturing process improvements for reagents and high-volume consumables.

  • Prepare technical reports, failure analysis documentation, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

  • International travel (Canada) will be required (estimated 1-4 times per year)

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. degree in Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or relevant scientific or technical field

  • 10+ years' experience in a technical or scientific role within life science instrumentation, consumables manufacturing, or regulated analytical environments

  • Demonstrated experience with assay development and troubleshooting, ideally in the context of biologics analytics.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with proven ability in applying advanced statistical methodologies to multifaceted data from assays, hardware, and process inputs to extract actionable insights.

  • Strong understanding of product design, development principles, and manufacturing processes for complex consumables/reagents used with scientific instruments.

  • Hands on experience in process development, scale-up, process implementation and/or validation in a commercial manufacturing facility.

  • Experience with root cause analysis and process validation, including design and execution of meaningful experiments to enable data-drive decisions.

  • Experience with managing multiple priorities while remaining flexible in fast-paced environment.

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; adept at working across scientific, engineering, and manufacturing teams.

  • Meticulous attention to detail; strong documentation of experimental designs, results, and plans through presentations and reports.
