Job Title: Bindery Operator

Reports to: Bindery Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary

Performs bindery functions and assists with shipping operations by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs bindery functions such as cutting, folding, Perfect binding, die cutting, laminating, Saddle stitching.
  • Reads job ticket to assess bindery functions required and records
  • Sets up and operates power and manually operated bindery machines for gathering, stitching, folding, cutting, stapling, drilling, punching, padding, collating and binding materials.
  • Loads and feeds paper stock and other supplies into machines.
  • Examines finished products for defects.
  • Records job time, supplies used and departmental charges.
  • Transports stock by cart or manually.
  • Packages materials for shipping and applies box labels that identify the product in the box.
  • Trims edges of bound material.
  • Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on bindery machines, including cleaning, adjusting and oiling.
  • Maintains bindery materials by checking inventory as needed to ensure adequate levels are maintained. Orders items as needed.
  • Performs basic maintenance and cleanup of the equipment as needed.
  • Assists with the preplanning of jobs as needed.
  • Examines stitched, collated, bound, and unbound publications to ascertain that pages are bound in numerical or folio order according to sample copy, and for such defects as imperfect bindings, ink spots, torn, loose, and uneven pages, and loose and uncut threads.
  • Inserts illustrated pages, extra sheets, and collated sets into catalogs, periodicals, directories, pocket portfolios, or looseleaf binders, and inserts sheets and applies labels to envelopes or periodicals by hand or machine.
  • Apply laminates both cold and hot of various mil’ thickness and sizes for final
  • Uses machinery to apply round corners to printed material.
  • Cleans work area around machinery
  • Assists with press / shipping and/or delivery operations as needed.
  • Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.
  • Works in a cooperative and collaborative manner with all other company employees and clients, contributing to building and maintaining a positive workplace environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Education/Experience

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and

    experience.

    Language Ability

    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present

    information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

    Math Ability

    Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and

    weight measurement, volume, and distance.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete

    variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word

    Processing software; Internet software; EFG Logic software; and Microsoft Outlook.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the
