To thrive as a BIM VDC Engineer, you need expertise in construction processes, 3D modeling, and digital design, typically backed by a degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management. Proficiency in software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and BIM 360, along with relevant BIM certifications, is essential. What is the difference between Bim Vdc Engineer vs Bim Coordinator?

AspectBim Vdc EngineerBim Coordinator
CertificationsRevit, Navisworks, Autodesk certificationsRevit, Navisworks, Autodesk certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, VDC departments, construction projectsProject management teams, design coordination, BIM implementation
Industry UsageUsed in architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) firmsUsed in AEC firms for project coordination

The Bim Vdc Engineer focuses on virtual design and construction (VDC) processes, including model development and clash detection, often working directly with design and construction teams. The Bim Coordinator primarily manages BIM workflows, ensuring model coordination and data consistency across teams. While both roles require similar certifications and work within the AEC industry, the Vdc Engineer is more technically oriented towards VDC tools and processes, whereas the Coordinator emphasizes project coordination and BIM management.

What is a BIM VDC engineer?

A BIM VDC Engineer is a professional who uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) technologies to manage and coordinate digital representations of construction projects. Their role involves creating precise 3D models, collaborating with architects, engineers, and contractors, and ensuring that project information is accurate and up-to-date throughout the construction process. They help improve project efficiency, reduce errors, and support communication among different stakeholders by leveraging digital tools and processes.

How does a BIM VDC engineer typically collaborate with other project stakeholders during a construction project?

As a BIM VDC Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with architects, structural and MEP engineers, contractors, and project managers to coordinate digital models and ensure design intent is maintained throughout the project lifecycle. This collaboration involves leading coordination meetings, resolving clashes using BIM tools, and facilitating clear communication among all stakeholders to minimize delays and errors. You'll also be responsible for updating and managing shared models, which requires a strong understanding of both technical software and interpersonal communication skills.

Job description

Intermountain Electric (IME) brings decades of experience as a trusted leader in electrical contracting. Founded in 1946, we began as a small company in Denver, CO, and have since grown to be part of the largest specialty contractor in North America. Today, we work with owners and contractors nationwide, delivering complex construction solutions across various industries, including aviation, mission critical, entertainment, and healthcare.
At IME, our people are our most valuable asset. We are committed to fostering a culture that prioritizes safety, quality, and professional growth. Joining IME is more than just finding a job—it's about building a career with opportunities to advance and make an organizational impact. Power your future with IME and be a part of a team that drives success in every project.

Intermountain Electric Inc. (IME) is seeking a BIM/VDC Coordinator to join their growing team!

  • Do you have the desire, skills, and proven strategy to be part of a winning team?
  • Do you love the challenge of finding unique solutions for complex projects?
  • Does the idea of growth and expansion motivate you?
  • Are you a team player who is ready to take on the responsibility of a prime role in a growing company?

We are seeking a skilled and motivated BIM/VDC Coordinator to join our dynamic electrical construction team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for bridging the gap between BIM/VDC Detailers and BIM/VDC Leads, ensuring coordinated models, maintaining project standards, and facilitating communication across all project stakeholders. The coordinator will support project delivery through clash detection, model management, and mentorship of junior team members, while also serving as a key point of contact for field staff. This role requires someone who is confident and comfortable communicating with project managers, foremen, and field crews to ensure designs are constructible, issues are resolved quickly, and project information flows smoothly between the office and the field.

Key Responsibilities:

  • BIM Implementation: Assist in the execution of BIM/VDC processes on assigned projects. Support the BIM/VDC Lead in developing and maintaining BIM Execution Plans (BEPs). Ensure compliance with company standards, client requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Modeling and Coordination: Manage coordination models using Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and other BIM software. Conduct clash detection and track resolution of conflicts across trades. Generate 2D drawings, shop drawings, and documentation derived from BIM models. Provide model extracts and coordination reports for project teams.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Act as the primary liaison between Detailer I/II and BIM/VDC Lead roles. Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and field teams to ensure accurate integration of electrical systems. Participate in and occasionally lead coordination meetings.
  • Training and Support: Mentor and provide guidance to BIM/VDC Detailer I and II team members. Assist with onboarding and training related to BIM/VDC workflows and software. Stay current on advancements in BIM/VDC technologies and recommend process improvements.

Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with BIM/VDC software in Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, or similar.
  • Basic understanding of construction processes and project life cycles.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
  • Experience with cloud-based collaboration platforms.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Computer Aided Drafting, or a related field or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience supporting large-scale projects, preferred.
  • Electrical construction experience, preferred.
  • Certifications in BIM/VDC-related technologies a plus.

Working Conditions:

The majority of the time you will work in a typical office environment, the remainder of the time you will be on construction job sites. When on construction job sites you will encounter typical construction conditions including extreme temperatures, noise, dust, mud debris, welding, leading edge, trenching, and shoring, sometimes in a confined space.  You may be required to visit multiple locations during any one day.

Benefits Overview:

IME provides an industry-leading comprehensive benefits package.  Full-time employees are eligible to choose from a variety of healthcare coverage options, which become effective the first of the month after hire.  In addition, employees are offered a substantial amount of PTO and are immediately eligible to make contributions to a generously matched and fully vested 401k.

Salary Range:

$76,500 - $103,500

*Final salary and rates are based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.*

Established in 1946, IME is part of Quanta Services, the largest specialty contractor in North America. We base our business model on always doing the right thing and pride ourselves in finding the best processes and practices in everything we do.
