Bim Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the BIM developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BIM Developer, you need strong proficiency in building information modeling software (such as Revit, Navisworks, or ArchiCAD), 3D modeling, and a background in architecture, engineering, or construction. Familiarity with programming languages (like Dynamo, Python, or C#) and relevant BIM certifications (such as Autodesk Certified Professional) are often required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective collaboration and communication skills are highly valued in this position. These abilities are crucial to ensure accurate digital modeling, coordination among multidisciplinary teams, and successful project delivery.

What is a BIM developer?

A BIM Developer is a professional who specializes in creating, customizing, and automating Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows and tools. They use programming languages like Python, C#, or Dynamo to enhance BIM software such as Revit, Navisworks, or AutoCAD. Their role involves developing scripts, plugins, and automation solutions to optimize design, construction, and data management processes. BIM Developers collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to improve efficiency and accuracy in digital construction models.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a BIM developer?

As a BIM Developer, your daily tasks often involve creating and maintaining digital models, developing custom tools or scripts to automate workflows, and coordinating with architects, engineers, and construction professionals to ensure model accuracy and consistency. You may review design data for conflicts, support project teams by generating documentation or visualizations, and troubleshoot software or interoperability issues. Collaboration is frequent, as you’ll work closely with various stakeholders to integrate model updates and resolve design challenges. Staying current with industry best practices and new technologies is also an important part of the role. These activities combine technical expertise with teamwork to help deliver efficient and high-quality construction projects.

Is BIM a good career path?

A BIM Developer is a specialized role in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries that involves creating and managing digital building models using software like Revit and Navisworks. It offers opportunities for growth, technical skill development, and involvement in large projects, making it a viable career choice for those interested in technology and design. Success often requires certifications and continuous learning to stay current with industry tools and standards.

Is BIM high in demand?

BIM (Building Information Modeling) specialists, including BIM Developers, are in high demand across the architecture, engineering, and construction industries due to the increasing adoption of digital design and construction methods. Employers seek professionals skilled in BIM software like Revit and Navisworks, often requiring certifications and experience with collaborative workflows. The demand is expected to grow as projects become more complex and technology-driven.

Job description

SYSTRA Canada is part of the SYSTRA group, an international consulting and engineering group, a world leader in the design of transport infrastructures. SYSTRA Canada is an engineering and consulting firm whose primary focus is to offer transportation solutions, whether for passengers or goods: feasibility studies of building a new railway line, increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure, privatization of a railway.

The BIM Specialist is responsible for creating, developing, maintaining, and governing BIM objects, templates, and library content to support project delivery across infrastructure, rail, and transportation assignments. He ensures that BIM content is structured, traceable, compliant, and aligned with project requirements, modelling standards, and the BIM Execution Plan (BEP), while supporting multidisciplinary teams in the effective use of object libraries, templates, and digital production workflows.

  • Create, develop, and maintain BIM objects, templates, and library content in accordance with input from the BIM Lead Team, design discipline teams, and project-specific BIM requirements.

  • Ensure traceability, documentation, and proper metadata management of all BIM content within the project’s designated information management systems.

  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary design teams to identify content needs, ensure timely availability, and support consistent modelling practices.

  • Integrate feedback and lessons learned to continuously improve and update the BIM object library throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Support automation of object creation, classification, and data management through scripts, plugins, or dedicated BIM tools and production tools configuration.

  • Assist discipline teams in the integration, structuring, and correct use of BIM objects within their models.

  • Contribute to maintaining alignment between object libraries, modelling standards, and project BIM Execution Plan (BEP) requirements.

  • Contribute to deployment support, user guidance, and training related to BIM tools, templates, and workflows.

Education: Degree or diploma in engineering, architecture, construction, BIM, or a related field.

Years of experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in BIM content development, BIM library management, or digital design support within infrastructure, rail, transportation, or multidisciplinary projects.

Technical competencies:

  • Proficiency in major BIM authoring platforms, including parametric object creation, family editing, attributes, and classification systems, such as but not limited to Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Bentley tools, and Autodesk Forma.

  • Strong understanding of BIM standards such as ISO 19650, BuildingSMART classifications, and project-specific modelling requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to create high-quality parametric objects aligned with project needs, discipline guidelines, and data requirements.

  • Experience managing BIM libraries, structured repositories, and metadata-rich BIM and CADD content within large-scale infrastructure or multidisciplinary projects.

  • Understanding of coordination processes, model exchange workflows, and data compliance.

  • Familiarity with 3D coordination environments.

  • Experience with scripting or automation tools is considered an asset.

  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, both in French and in English.*

*Reasons for requiring bilingualism: You will have the opportunity to work with a varied clientele, including both French- and English-speaking companies. Bilingualism is therefore fundamental to building strong relationships with our customers, understanding their specific needs, communicating effectively in their preferred language and facilitating strategic meetings.

Personal and soft skills:

  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality.

  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Proactive and solution-oriented approach.

  • Ability to provide user support, guidance, and informal training.
