What is a BIM Automation Engineer?

BIM Automation Engineers are professionals who specialize in automating Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes within architectural, engineering, and construction projects. They develop scripts, tools, and workflows to streamline repetitive tasks, enhance collaboration, and improve project efficiency. Their expertise bridges the gap between design and technology, enabling teams to generate accurate building models, extract data, and optimize project outcomes. BIM Automation Engineers often work with software such as Revit, Dynamo, and other BIM platforms to deliver automation solutions tailored to project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM Automation Engineer?

To thrive as a BIM Automation Engineer, you need strong expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), programming (such as Python or Dynamo), and a relevant degree in engineering or architecture. Familiarity with BIM software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and scripting or automation tools is typically required, along with certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and deliver innovative automation solutions. These skills ensure efficient project workflows, reduce manual errors, and drive productivity in construction and design projects.

How does a BIM Automation Engineer typically collaborate with architects and other project stakeholders?

A BIM Automation Engineer works closely with architects, engineers, and construction teams to streamline project workflows by developing scripts and tools that automate repetitive tasks within BIM software. They facilitate efficient data exchange, ensure model accuracy, and help resolve technical challenges that arise during the design and coordination phases. Regular meetings and ongoing communication are essential, as the engineer often customizes automation solutions to fit the specific needs of each stakeholder, promoting smoother project delivery and minimizing manual errors.

What is the difference between Bim Automation Engineer vs Bim Coordinator?

Job description

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Senior Revit / BIM Manager to lead BIM planning and execution for complex architectural projects. This role combines hands‑on Revit expertise with project leadership, coordination, standards development, quality control, and team support.

The successful candidate will work closely with project leadership, designers, consultants, and technology specialists to establish practical BIM strategies and maintain reliable models from project startup through delivery. This is not solely an administrative or software‑support role. You will be expected to understand project priorities, identify delivery risks, make sound technical decisions, and help teams produce coordinated work.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Lead BIM planning, model strategy, and digital delivery for assigned architectural projects.
  • Develop and maintain project BIM execution plans, model responsibilities, file structures, exchange protocols, and milestone requirements.
  • Set up and govern Revit models, worksharing, links, coordinates, phases, design options, templates, parameters, and publishing workflows.
  • Establish model and documentation standards that respond to project scope, schedule, consultant requirements, and contractual deliverables.
  • Perform regular model‑health, standards, and QA/QC reviews; document findings and lead corrective action.
  • Coordinate architectural models with structural, building systems, specialty consultant, contractor, and fabrication information.
  • Lead model exchanges, clash and issue review, coordination meetings, and resolution tracking.
  • Manage project information and permissions in Autodesk Construction Cloud or comparable common data environments.
  • Diagnose complex Revit and interoperability issues and provide timely, practical resolutions.
  • Partner with project managers to plan BIM resources, priorities, deliverables, and risk mitigation.
  • Train and mentor project staff, establish clear working practices, and improve team capability without disrupting delivery.
  • Coordinate with computational and software specialists to identify appropriate automation opportunities.
  • Contribute lessons learned, reusable content, and project experience to firmwide standards and digital‑delivery practices.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ten or more years of professional Revit and BIM experience in architecture, engineering, construction, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading BIM delivery on complex architectural projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of Revit modeling and documentation, including worksharing, model coordinates, links, families, parameters, schedules, phases, design options, and model performance.
  • Strong understanding of architectural project delivery across design, documentation, coordination, and construction administration.
  • Experience developing BIM execution plans, project standards, model‑audit procedures, and coordination workflows.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary models and resolving issues across organizational boundaries.
  • Ability to distinguish model, software, process, and project‑management problems and recommend proportionate solutions.
  • Experience supporting and mentoring Revit users with different levels of expertise.
  • Strong planning, facilitation, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM Collaborate Pro, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Rhino, Grasshopper, or Rhino.Inside.Revit.
  • Knowledge of information‑management standards, model element authorship, levels of development, model exchanges, and structured BIM deliverables.
  • Experience managing Revit content libraries, templates, shared parameters, and multi‑project standards.
  • Familiarity with Dynamo, Python, Revit automation, model‑checking tools, or data‑reporting workflows.
  • Experience supporting large, geometrically complex, or technically demanding cultural, commercial, institutional, or mixed‑use projects.
  • Professional architecture or engineering licensure, BIM certification, or comparable advanced training.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • Project models remain stable, coordinated, and aligned with delivery requirements.
  • BIM decisions are made early, documented clearly, and understood by the people responsible for the work.
  • Coordination issues and model risks are identified before they affect major milestones.
  • Project teams receive effective guidance while retaining clear ownership of design and documentation.
  • Standards and lessons learned improve future projects rather than remaining isolated within one team.
COMPENSATION

The anticipated base salary range for this Los Angeles position is $105,000-$140,000 per year. The range is a good‑faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, project responsibility, technical depth, leadership capability, education, and internal equity. Base salary does not represent total compensation or benefits.
