What are BIM Automation Engineers?

BIM Automation Engineers are professionals who specialize in automating Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes within architectural, engineering, and construction projects. They develop scripts, tools, and workflows to streamline repetitive tasks, enhance collaboration, and improve project efficiency. Their expertise bridges the gap between design and technology, enabling teams to generate accurate building models, extract data, and optimize project outcomes. BIM Automation Engineers often work with software such as Revit, Dynamo, and other BIM platforms to deliver automation solutions tailored to project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BIM Automation Engineer, you need strong expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), programming (such as Python or Dynamo), and a relevant degree in engineering or architecture. Familiarity with BIM software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and scripting or automation tools is typically required, along with certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and deliver innovative automation solutions. These skills ensure efficient project workflows, reduce manual errors, and drive productivity in construction and design projects.

What is the difference between Bim Automation Engineer vs Bim Coordinator?

The Bim Automation Engineer focuses on creating automation solutions to streamline BIM processes, while the Bim Coordinator manages BIM models and ensures standards compliance. Both roles require BIM software knowledge, but the Automation Engineer emphasizes scripting and tool development, whereas the Coordinator emphasizes coordination and quality control.

Will AI replace BIM?

AI is expected to augment the role of Bim Automation Engineers by automating repetitive tasks and improving data analysis within Building Information Modeling (BIM). However, human expertise remains essential for complex decision-making, design validation, and coordination in BIM workflows. AI tools are viewed as complementary technologies that enhance efficiency rather than fully replacing professionals in the field.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in large corporations or high-demand industries.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-demand industries. Executive-level engineering roles or those with significant managerial responsibilities may also reach this compensation level.

How does a BIM Automation Engineer typically collaborate with architects and other project stakeholders?

A BIM Automation Engineer works closely with architects, engineers, and construction teams to streamline project workflows by developing scripts and tools that automate repetitive tasks within BIM software. They facilitate efficient data exchange, ensure model accuracy, and help resolve technical challenges that arise during the design and coordination phases. Regular meetings and ongoing communication are essential, as the engineer often customizes automation solutions to fit the specific needs of each stakeholder, promoting smoother project delivery and minimizing manual errors.

Is BIM engineer a good career?

A BIM Automation Engineer specializes in developing and implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes and tools, often using software like Revit and Navisworks. The role offers strong job growth prospects in architecture, engineering, and construction industries, with opportunities for specialization and certification. It requires technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of construction workflows, making it a valuable career choice for those interested in digital design and project coordination.

BIM/VDC Engineer

FieldAI

Irvine, CA

Full-time

Posted 27 days ago

Job description

FieldAI is transforming how robots interact with the real world. We are building risk-aware, reliable, and field-ready AI systems that address the most complex challenges in robotics, unlocking the full potential of embodied intelligence. We go beyond typical data-driven approaches or pure transformer-based architectures, and are charting a new course, with already-globally-deployed solutions delivering real-world results and rapidly improving models through real-field applications.

We are looking for a BIM/VDC Engineer who can work at the intersection of BIM modeling, point cloud data, construction documentation, and process automation. This role is ideal for someone who has hands-on experience creating and reviewing BIM models from point clouds, understands construction drawings and site conditions, and is excited about improving workflows through automation.

You will be responsible for checking BIM models created by our teams, ensuring they are accurate against point cloud data, identifying deviations or modeling issues, and helping build scalable processes to make BIM QA/QC faster, more consistent, and more automated.

What You Will Get To Do

BIM Model Review & Quality Control

  • Review BIM models created from point clouds and validate them against source data.

  • Check model accuracy, completeness, geometry quality, classification, naming, and level of detail.

  • Identify missing, misaligned, duplicated, or incorrectly modeled elements.

  • Compare BIM models against point clouds, drawings, and site documentation.

  • Prepare QA/QC reports with actionable feedback for modelers.

  • Ensure models follow project-specific BIM standards, modeling guidelines, and delivery requirements.

Point Cloud to BIM Workflows

  • Work with point cloud data from LiDAR scans, 360 captures, or reality capture systems.

  • Understand scan registration quality, point cloud density, alignment issues, and data gaps.

  • Support workflows for converting existing site conditions into clean BIM models.

Automation & Process Improvement

  • Identify repetitive BIM tasks that can be automated.

  • Support the development of scripts, tools, templates, checklists, and workflows to improve efficiency.

  • Work with product, engineering, and operations teams to translate manual BIM processes into automated or semi-automated workflows.

  • Help create rule-based checks for model validation, including naming, categorization, element properties, geometry issues.

What You Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architecture

  • 3+ years of experience in BIM modeling, BIM coordination, or scan-to-BIM workflows.

  • Strong experience with Revit and BIM

  • Experience working with point clouds and validating BIM models against reality capture data.

  • Good understanding of construction drawings, building elements, levels, grids, MEP/structural/architectural coordination, and site documentation.

  • Experience with BIM standards, LOD requirements, naming conventions, parameters, and model organization.

  • Experience with scan-to-BIM delivery for commercial, industrial, infrastructure, or large construction projects.

  • Experience with tools such as Navisworks, Recap, CloudCompare, Cyclone, Autodesk Construction Cloud or BIM 360.

What Will Set You Apart
  • Experience creating automation scripts for BIM workflows using Dynamo, Python, Revit API, or similar tools.

  • Familiarity with IFC, COBie, BIM data standards, or construction asset classification systems.

  • Experience with tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper, or Blender.
