What is BIM 360?

BIM 360 is a cloud-based construction management software developed by Autodesk. It is designed to help project teams collaborate more effectively by centralizing project data, streamlining workflows, and improving communication among stakeholders throughout the design, construction, and operations phases. BIM 360 provides tools for document management, field data collection, quality and safety management, and project tracking, making it easier to manage complex construction projects. Its real-time collaboration capabilities help reduce errors, increase efficiency, and ensure everyone is working with the most up-to-date information.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM 360 specialist?

To thrive as a BIM 360 Specialist, you need expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), architecture or engineering principles, and familiarity with construction workflows, often supported by a degree in a related field. Proficiency in Autodesk BIM 360 software, Revit, Navisworks, and relevant certifications such as Autodesk Certified Professional are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for coordinating teams and managing project data. These skills are crucial for streamlining project collaboration, minimizing errors, and ensuring efficient construction project delivery.

How does a BIM 360 specialist typically collaborate with other project stakeholders during the construction process?

As a BIM 360 specialist, you’ll frequently work alongside architects, engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure seamless information sharing and coordination across the project lifecycle. Your role involves setting up and managing BIM 360 projects, training team members on best practices, and troubleshooting technical issues to keep workflows efficient. Regular collaboration meetings and digital reviews are common, where you’ll help resolve clashes, review design updates, and ensure everyone is accessing the latest project data. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also provides valuable experience working with multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Bim 360 vs Revit?

FeatureBim 360Revit
Primary UseCloud-based construction management and collaboration platformBuilding information modeling (BIM) software for design and documentation
Work EnvironmentWeb-based, accessible via browsers and mobile devicesDesktop application primarily for Windows
Required CredentialsKnowledge of construction workflows, cloud platformsArchitectural or engineering design background, CAD/BIM skills
Industry UsageConstruction project management, field collaborationDesign, drafting, and modeling in architecture and engineering

While Bim 360 focuses on construction project management and collaboration in the cloud, Revit is primarily used for detailed building design and modeling. Both are essential in the AEC industry but serve different stages of the project lifecycle.

Job Description
The BIM Manager will be expected to perform the following key responsibilities:
  • Model Coordination: Integrate multidisciplinary models (Architectural, Structural, MEP) into a single federated model. Set and maintain the shared project coordinate system and origin point across all linked models.
  • Clash Detection: Perform regular milestone clash detection and lead coordination workshops to resolve design conflicts prior to construction. Utilize and enforce project clash priority hierarchy to resolve conflicts.
  • BIM Execution Plan (BEP): Develop project-specific BEP based on Client and project requirements.
  • Standard Enforcement: Implement and enforce project-level BIM standards, file naming conventions, and protocols outlined in the BIM Execution Plan (BEP).
  • Data & CDE Management: Establish and manage the Common Data Environment (CDE), ensuring data structures and model parameters are accurate and compliant. Administer the CDE platform (ACC, BIM 360, SharePoint, or ProjectWise), set up and maintain folder structures and discipline worksets, manage permission levels between disciplines, and enforce model segmentation limits (file size targets, splitting by building/area/discipline).
  • LOD and Data Requirements: Confirm LOD targets by project phase, maintain the Model Element Author matrix where scope overlaps between disciplines, and verify shared parameter and data field compliance (asset IDs, line numbers, spec, service, etc.).
  • Vendor and Supplier Model Coordination. Review submitted vendor and supplier models (native plus neutral format plus PDF cutsheets) for LOD compliance and accurate connection points before incorporating into the coordination model.
  • Progress Tracking and Reporting. Track model-based progress against project milestones (30/60/90 DD, IFC issue, handover) and maintain risk log tying model conflicts to schedule and cost impact.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct routine model health checks and audits to ensure compliance with project deliverables for KPI's and Client's requirements.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Lead BIM coordination meetings with clients, design teams, and subcontractors.
  • Training & Support: Provide technical support and training to project teams regarding BIM software and workflow efficiencies.
  • Closeout and Record Documentation. Compile final models, COBie or asset data, and Record Drawing documentation at project closeout.

Job Requirements
  • Experience: 7-10 years minimum experience in AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) with a proven track record in BIM coordination.
  • Software Proficiency:
    • Advanced knowledge of Autodesk Revit, Navisworks Manage, and AutoCAD.
    • Knowledge of CADWorx, Plant 3D, or E3D is a plus.
    • Familiarity with cloud-based collaboration platforms (e.g., BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIMcollab).
    • Familiarity with reality capture tools (ReCap Pro or equivalent) for laser scans.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of clash detection, and LOD (AIA G202 Level of Development framework) specifications. Working knowledge of IFC and COBie data exchange standards.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to articulate technical data clearly to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Training: AGC Certificate of Management, Building Information Modeling (CM BIM) is a plus.
