Mission Statement: Unlocking potential while protecting your most critical assets.
Core Values: Care Trust Help (C.T.H.)
Summary of Position
Niles Shared Services, LLC is a privately held and financially strong industrial services company that prides itself on the safety of its workers. Niles is looking for a full-time Construction Safety Officer. The Construction Safety Officer plays a critical role in supporting the safe execution of construction, maintenance, and industrial services across all lines of business, including roofing, painting, mechanical restoration, scaffolding, and insulation, for both union and non-union workforces. This field-focused role emphasizes proactive hazard identification and the implementation of direct controls and safeguards to prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) associated with a wide range of construction and industrial operations.
Working closely with Operations, Project Management, and Field Leadership, the Construction Safety Officer ensures safety planning is effectively integrated into daily work practices across diverse job sites and trades. This role also serves as a mentor to foremen and crews, promoting a consistent, strong culture of safety across all business units.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and support project-specific safety plans and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for a variety of construction and industrial activities, including roofing, painting/coatings, mechanical restoration, insulation, scaffolding, surface preparation, and related trades.
- Maintain a strong field presence (approximately 75% travel) to actively support job sites through real-time hazard recognition and implementation of effective controls during high-risk activities.
- Support union and non-union crews, ensuring safety requirements, expectations, and controls are clearly communicated and consistently applied across varying labor environments.
- Mentor and build safety capability in foremen, supervisors, and craft workforce personnel, enabling them to recognize hazards, apply direct controls and safeguards, and make sound, safe operational decisions.
- Conduct daily and periodic field observations and safety inspections, including review of:
-
- Fall protection systems
- Scaffolds and elevated work platforms
- Rigging and material handling
- Task-specific PPE
- Confined spaces
- Equipment, tools, and jobsite conditions
-
- Verify compliance with OSHA 1926 construction standards and applicable company safety policies.
- Support and participate in pre-task planning, management of change discussions, daily safety huddles, and toolbox talks.
- Assist with incident, near-miss, and hazard investigations, emphasizing root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
- Prepare, present, and deliver safety training; facilitate safety meetings; and represent the safety function during project kickoff and coordination meetings.
- Provide practical, field-based guidance related to:
- Fall protection
- Confined space entry
- Respiratory protection
- Hazard communication
- Chemical handling and storage
- Heat stress and environmental hazards
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of safety plans, inspections, observations, training, and corrective actions.
- Possess and exercise the authority to intervene and stop work when imminent hazards or unsafe conditions are identified.
Success Factors
Success in this role is demonstrated through the development and consistent execution of effective safety plans and JSAs, strong on-site engagement during high-risk work activities, measurable improvement in safety awareness and ownership among field personnel, and the prevention of serious injury and fatality potential events-while supporting safe, productive operations across all lines of business.
Position Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in construction or industrial safety, supporting multiple trades or scopes of work.
- Proven experience working in active construction environments, including elevated work, changing job sites, and outdoor conditions.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English (required), with the ability to communicate safety expectations clearly to a diverse workforce.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA 1926 Construction standards, including fall protection, scaffolding, hazard communication, respiratory protection, and confined spaces.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (required).
- Demonstrated ability to interpret SDS information and develop practical, effective field-level controls.
- Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills with the ability to build trust and influence across crews, foremen, and leadership.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 75% of the time, including out-of-state travel.
- Ability to work at heights and in varying environmental and jobsite conditions.
